Been away from the DS scene for a long time. Looking to buy a New 3DS XL... Probably 11.0 FW.

What are my CFW options? (Looking to run ROM backups, no need for homebrew) From what I've read so far I HAVE to hardmod, use that correct?

Hardmod then downgrade to 9.2.0-20. I, and a lot of other people, recommend using Luma3DS as the CFW.

You can't on stock 11.0. You need to hardmod to downgrade on that.

10.6.0 - 11.0.0, or have a browser version (the last number in the version, such as 11.0.0-33) of less than -20:
Use the following instructions for various alternate entrypoints in place of Part 1 (as Browserhax and menuhax were patched with 10.6.0 and will no longer work and versions less than -20 cannot be used with Browserhax.)

• Ninjhax (requires Cubic Ninja)
• smashbroshax (requires Super Smash Bros. and only works on New 3DS)
• oot3dhax (requires Ocarina of Time 3D and either a powersaves or another 3DS which has the HomeBrew Launcher)
• supermysterychunkhax (requires Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon and another 3DS which has the HomeBrew Launcher)

Once you manage a cartridge-based exploit, you would use that in place of Part 1. Then you'd follow part 2 of the guide.

trying to upgrade my old 3ds from 4.2 to 9.2 but in this step i get error

1. Go to "SysNAND Options", then "Miscellaneous...", then select the "Health & Safety Dump" option to dump Health & Safety to hs.app (you can use Up and Down / Left and Right to change the name)

after i hit health safety dump i get error
app0 not foun or fragmented
health and safety dump failed

Hi. I just copied my SD cards to another SD card using the stickied thread here.

Then I tried running PastaCFW through ninjahax and I keep getting this weird screen.

Try the Homebrew Grid Launcher? I don't know if would meet your needs tho. Also, delete any applications you don't use.

You basically got it right, just make sure to use the .3dsx version of SafeA9LHInstaller, basically copy the 3ds folder from the SafeA9LHInstaller zip. Also, copy over the SafeA9LHInstaller.dat as well. Not sure if it's needed, but just in case.

Make sure it's the latest release, which is 2.0.3 at the time of this post.

Also, make sure you copied your OTP.bin into your /a9lh folder.

And yes, ignore any steps that mention EmuNAND or RedNAND. And as for that step that asks your to re-insert your SD Card, what you want to do is boot up Menuhax, which is hold down d-pad per Part 1, and from there launch SafeA9LHInstaller. Make sure to have done steps four and five of Section I of Part 5, to have the proper files inside your a9lh folder on the root of your SD Card, in addition to the OTP.bin.

What would be the best and cheapest flash card for nds roms to get, that works on a 3ds with al9h, luma3ds and no emunand?

Any ideas?

I recommend you get DSTT with your setup (A9LH+Luma3DS CFW SysNAND)

I think the problem here is that when using the GW Downgrader it fragments the NAND and causes problems on the partition of the SD (?)

If someone with more knowledge to this please expand further to help OP

I have no idea what terms to search for or what the best method is for getting everything updated. I can update the Gateway software but is Gateway still a good option? I keep reading about custom firmwares and now something about A9LH but everything seems to be kind of scattered. Could someone help point me in the right direction?

Well, the simplest thing to do is to update to 3.7.1 Launcher.dat and then update your EmuNAND to 11.0 and keep using it as you have always done so.

Now if you want A9LH, avoid GW-A9LH at all costs, it's a locked down version that keeps you completely locked down to Gateway3DS, you won't have access to recovery tools like EmuNAND9, Decrypt9, Hourglass9 or options to use other CFW like Luma3DS and others.

Now with that said, I'd recommend you look at this guide.
