I had a thought cross my mind. (that happens from time to time) If I use gateway to load an out of region rom, and try to download dlc or patches, or even try to go online, (in the future) would there be any problem with that, as I'm in the US, connected to US eshop, on a US console, trying to access content for something that shouldn't even work on my system?

I noticed also that any roms I play don't register on my library.

It won't say an update is available for out of region games.

Yeah, it wouldn't look for updates because an update wouldn't be available on the US eshop for a EU/Japanese title (I assume it looks for game ID's). It wouldn't apply the patch to a foreign game, even if it is already downloaded.

You have to buy a game. You can't without one.

1) How did you have a NAND-backup of 3.0.0?
2) Why didn't you backup 4.x instead?

A: Impossible. Unless you use a ROM, but you can't since you're not at 4.1.

Oh. From the way you worded it, we assumed you meant it was the same console. Language barrier, I guess.

So anyway, to get to 4.1-4.5, you will need to buy, rent, borrow, etc. a game with those updates.

Yes, but a) it's not recommended and b) you can't use the GW card if you're on 3.0.0. Your only choice is to use an actual game. See this post for a list of games you can get. All you have to do is buy one at a store, then return it 10 minutes later for whatever reason you come up with.

EDIT (2013-08-07): Quote above is old info, according to gateway 3DS website it also works on 4.1.0 too.

As long as you are between 4.1.0 and 4.5.0 you can just use a backup ROM to update to 4.5.0
Note that you won't be able to run backup ROMs that require a firmware version higher then 4.5.0.

edit (2013-08-09): krzz got an email from gateway saying that you cannot update by using a backup ROM, so
If you are not on 4.5.0 firmware, you need to update using an original game listed in the 4.5.0 section below.

edit (2013-08-17): sonic2756 has reported success in updating to 4.5.0 using a rom of Luigi's Mansion with Gateway v1.0 loader.

Your 3DS should show the version of the update the game will install in the update message.
Make sure you double check the update version message before going ahead with the update.

(Any game released between January 2013 and June 2013 should have an update between 4.1.0 and 4.5.0)

Hey everyone, that Gateway 3DS came! Now, it came with 2 gateways inside, a blue one and a red one.

The blue's shaped to fit a regular DS and i've seen people say it works like an R4? So my question is this: Is this blue cart for 3DS running DS homebrew, or will it work in a Regular DS too? because i've already got an R4, but using it's SD in the Gateway in a regular DS states that DS_MENU.dat cannot be found.

Whether that means it's like a clone cart which can't be updated and i'm using a firmware which is too high i'm not sure, but a little enlightenment would be helpful thanks!
