I think some parts aged badly or are just overlooked like the horrible backtracking in gc version.
I do must admit, Chapter 4 of TTYD took Doopliss' trolling too far. That chapter would take about half an hour if not for all the copious walking it makes you do (which I always felt like was why they left the backtracking in)
But aside from that, I can't think of any part of TTYD I'd call poor game design

EDIT: Super Paper Mario had the best story in the series, hands down

Remember when the youtuber Arlo made a petition to remaster TTYD

I don't, but I hope that happens, I despise the concept of using a lazy remaster as a cashgrab but I'd buy a copy of that even though I don't own a Switch. I genuinely think the old games are just better games

Wii Super Paper Mario is best Paper Mario.
Lots of people just say TTYD (including me), however Super deserves a spot in the classic list

I'd like a remaster as kids could understand what a good Paper Mario is

Super doesn't count as a Paper Mario game in my book, but it's so charming that nobody cares. People've thrown larger fits over every game after Super and I think that means a lot.

There should be onscreen prompts to help with the timing when doing attacks. (When you need to press a button for extra damage.) Sort of like a rhythm game. The lack of this is a problem in both styles.

Maybe there should be a Donkey Kong Country RPG, seeing as DK appeared in his own rhythm game before and uses drum based attacks in other games, so he would be the perfect way to introduce this.

Oddly enough Sonic Chronicles did the onscreen prompts idea long ago, but that was touchscreen based so maybe that's why. You had to tap the screen in specific areas or drag in certain directions. But then again, imagine if you could just tap the screen anywhere and the prompts didn't appear, and you simply had to guess when was the right moments you had to tap the screen. I'm sure everyone would have found that infuriating and not only that, it would have led to people utterly destroying their bottom screens from forceful stylus pokes. But if you think about it, that example is pretty much as bad as the way Paper Mario does it.

Mario & Luigi series at least has an excuse since the actions are real time, the timing isn't prescripted. You can make Mario or Luigi jump and it's simply on you to jump when you want. No different from a 2D platformer really. But in Sticker Star when I use a hammer attack and the hammer falls off seemingly no matter what I do, meaning I've just been mashing the button like an idiot for no gain, I just want to punch someone. (Although Sticker Star is a god awful game regardless. This post is mainly a suggestion as how to make the old style better. It may be true that the new style is a lost cause.)

The problem goes well beyond Paper Mario. I tried the demo for some game called Cris Tales on the Switch and stopped playing instantly. But if Paper Mario introduced something like this maybe other devs would become woke to the idea and follow their example. Nintendo is followed/copied a lot, sadly they tend to be very selective or maybe even stubborn when it comes to certain design decisions.

It's really easy to not have the hammer fall off, I never have a problem with that. You press A when the hammer is fully cocked back. It's as easy as doing an excellent jump in M&L games and stuff.

EDIT: Oops, sorry, don't know exactly how to do this quote stuff yet, new to GBAtemp :)

I'm really just replying to show you this

But I do agree, I had no difficulty with the hammer; the only command I felt was rough was the Eekhammer

EDIT; Holy, replying to your broken formatting broke the formatting

Thank you :) I know how to quote entire messages, just not sections. I tried to just delete the parts I didn't need to quote but it didn't work or maybe I just messed it up. Also yeah, I had trouble with the eekhammer but I also thought it kinda sucked as an attack regardless so I only used it for the final battle on the Thwomp :P

The handful of times I did get the hammer to work I still end up failing the next time. The problem is that a human being is always going to press the button slightly off in either direction (as in earlier or later), even if it's just by a millisecond or two, which can lead to false positives if your wrong timing is too close to the correct one, and vice versa.

It doesn't help that the game's attacks are single use meaning I can't just buckle down and spam hammers until I finally figure it out.

Also an aside, when I played Mario RPG I had no qualms with the mechanic back then, but I would be redundantly pressing A at various instances during attacks and spell animations thinking it would increase the damage dealt. It's superstitious and weird. Just have it onscreen for cryin' out loud.

Again, I think that's just you. I was able to spam hammers as much as wanted and rarely had a problem.

I loved the original Paper Mario 64, and TTYD as well. From what I can tell Nintendo has mostly been doing ports and remakes lately.. so I would not count out the possibility that a full remaster of one of them will be the next in the series. And if that's the case, they can take my money, because I'd play the heck out of it.

Wii Super Paper Mario is best Paper Mario.

This. The story was just amazing. In my opinion has the best of any Paper Mario game ever, the only reason I still prefer TTYD and 64 is because Super Paper Mario took on a weird platformer style, and we already had New Super Mario Bros Wii at the time.

Also, Dimentio is the greatest villain in the series, don't @ me.
