Though it may have faced numerous delays and even a lawsuit, the Atari VCS is on the verge of actually releasing this time around. Originally announced back in 2017 as the Ataribox, then re-revealed as the Atari VCS in 2018, the system will be launching on December 14th, just in time for Christmas. Pre-orders have also gone live in North America, where the VCS 800 is available at either GameStop or Walmart. It'll set you back $389.99, though GameStop is offering it for $10 cheaper. The Atari VCS 800 comes with a standard controller and a retro joystick, while the console features 8GB of DDR4 RAM, of which can be upgraded, along with a Ryzen processor.

The Atari VCS 800 Onyx All In Bundle includes the Atari VCS 800 Onyx Base as well as the Classic Joystick and Modern Controller. The Atari VCS 800 comes with 8GB RAM that is fully upgradeable and users will experience an ever-expanding Atari world of all-new games, classic and remastered favorites, streaming multimedia and personal apps; or can easily make their own. The powerful AMD Ryzen processor featuring Radeon Graphics Technology can handle it all, including 4K HDR streaming, while the all-new Atari Classic Joystick and Atari Modern Controller make everything easy and fun. Expand the storage of your Atari VCS and unlock the open Sandbox with a USB drive. Retail Exclusive to Gamestop. Made in USA.
  • PLAY: Discover new and classic games on Atari's new open platform, powered by AMD Ryzen with Radeon Graphics Technology.
  • STREAM:Watch your favorite web-based streaming videos and entertainment, and play games at up to 4K resolution and 60fps.
  • CREATE: Develop new TV-based games and apps for yourself, your family, or to share with the Atari VCS community.
  • PERSONALIZE:With Atari VCS "Sandbox Mode," unlock freedom and versatility you can't get with any other home entertainment system.

Atari boasts that their system will have over 100 retro games bundled in at launch, running on Atari World, a Linux-based operating system, though it will also allow you to install "any OS" in the VCS's "PC mode". There's 32GB of storage on board, with the option to plug in external USB drives to expand it. If you want to buy the system itself, with no extras, you can pre-order it for $279.99, while either controller will retail for $59.99.

You can install any other OS on it?
Like I would install Windows 7 Ultimate and use the spare GB to install Retroarch?
I don't know. I don't have (nor want) one.

But from leaked footage and stuff, it's a linux box/steam machine.

If you are charging almost the same money than a Nintendo Switch? You lose.

Yes I just checked, a new Switch is just a few dollars cheaper than this thing.

Chary literally said it on her article.

Ok, it's a bit overpriced for what it offers... but let's say that you can get it for... say... 100-80 bucks?
That's a sweet deal to me!

Anyone remember the HP Touchpad tablet? $500 at launch then went on a firesale just 49 days after release.....won't be surprised if this has a firesale. It's way over priced for what it is....it's being released just a couple weeks after PS5/Xbox Series X and it's TOO close to Christmas....Most people are going to want their Christmas shopping well before the week or two BEFORE Christmas. So there is nothing going for it. The only people that really know about it's existence is going to be the gamers...not the casual crowd...gamers already have their eyes set on PS5/Xbox Series X. Even people that are nostalgic for Atari aren't going to pay $400 for this. Thats what those Atari Flashback systems are for...they are priced at "impulse buy" prices...

So I guess they missed the failure of the steam box.

At a fair price this could be a good option for people who just want a cheap PC to play simple games without having to build it, but if what they want is simplicity then the hurdles you face when trying to run PC games on it are a deal breaker.

On top of that, they mention a Raven Ridge 2 CPU, which isn't actually a thing that exists so I'll assume they just mean the refresh of the CPUs, with 8GB of RAM that are upgradable, which makes me think they have a single 8GB stick in there with an empty slot, which means the system's performance is crippled out of the box unless you upgrade.

Well they're actually using AMD's latest embedded SoCs, one of the R1000 series, I'm not sure where Atari got "Raven Ridge 2" from unless they're completely changing the hardware again to some super secret AMD CPU or something (which I doubt).

It'll most likely be the R1505G, which quite frankly is a pretty piss poor SoC for the price they're charging. $279.99 for just 2c/4t and a bad Vega 3? This thing is barely going to play anything from like 2016+ at 1080p.

Yeah Atari can fuck off I ain't paying almost 400 bucks for a regular ass Linux PC with only 0.46 teraflops in a Atari branded box, with a quite shady development, and many others can agree. This is gonna be a disaster.

Also Atari Vault, which is the 100 built in Atari games, is literally on Steam for 10 bucks and has been for 4 years now, which takes away the majority of the value of the system
even better: the atari valt often goes on sale for $1 USD. my evidence: https://www.fanatical.com/en/game/atari-vault

That's even worse then. On the plus side, the single channel memory doesn't matter as much since it will run like shit regardless.

I have no doubt the price will be reduced after the ps5 and xboxsex come out at around the same price (especially the tinyxsex). for 200 it might be pretty good as a streaming/gaming box, though i'll be perfectly happy with the xboxsex if it has kodi support.

Gotta fill them landfills

That ET kept falling into, only being able to recover by extending his neck to phase through all the crap...*Alex Jones impression* ONLY TO BE PULLED BACK IN BY THE INVISIBLE HYDRA WEAPON DEVELOPED IN AREA 51 BY THE WRECKAGE OF ROSWELL AND GENETIC ENGINEERING DONE IN CHINA 8 YEARS AGO WHEN OBAMA WAS PRESIDENT! I'M JUST SAYING, I HAVE GOOD SOURCES!

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Cool! Ouya meets Mini retro console craze and jacks up the price excessively! This thing's gonna get no support and then all you'll be able to do is play pong in 4k...

Well, I can imagine that being one of the few games that could run via ray-tracing at 144FPS! XD

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

atari must be almost broke they must be desperate for money

For about as many times Mario has saved Peach, a Vampire Killer has Begun to make Dracula cry Bloody Tears, Megaman has stopped Dr. Wily's plans...I could go on!

Ah, the same price for which I bought Skullgirls on the same site...

FOR FUCKS SAKE
i came over here seeing a new professional controller and shit, expecting atari to make a whole new god damn console, and i end up seeing another fucking emulation box. i hate this so much, i wanted to see atari actually come back into the gaming scene, not for their legacy but purely because i want to see another competitor enter the gaming ring so we can have more console choices, and then it turns out its not an actual full fledged console, NOOOOO its another FUCKING EMULATION BOX
This is really starting to make me hate emulation boxes, like you get hyped because 'new console yay, now we'll have 4 guys to compete with each other' but then its just another emulation box
honestly im going to be completely honest when i say this, if youre making a comeback into the console industry, either go for it fully or get out. dont chicken out and rely on your legacy and shit in order to carry yourself to the top because that shit isnt gonna work. Either make a fully fledged console with studios, games, and exclusives, or get out.
also, inb4 people tell me "you actually thought this would be anything but an emulation box?"
