Though it may have faced numerous delays and even a lawsuit, the Atari VCS is on the verge of actually releasing this time around. Originally announced back in 2017 as the Ataribox, then re-revealed as the Atari VCS in 2018, the system will be launching on December 14th, just in time for Christmas. Pre-orders have also gone live in North America, where the VCS 800 is available at either GameStop or Walmart. It'll set you back $389.99, though GameStop is offering it for $10 cheaper. The Atari VCS 800 comes with a standard controller and a retro joystick, while the console features 8GB of DDR4 RAM, of which can be upgraded, along with a Ryzen processor.

Atari boasts that their system will have over 100 retro games bundled in at launch, running on Atari World, a Linux-based operating system, though it will also allow you to install "any OS" in the VCS's "PC mode". There's 32GB of storage on board, with the option to plug in external USB drives to expand it. If you want to buy the system itself, with no extras, you can pre-order it for $279.99, while either controller will retail for $59.99.

That price is too high for what you get IMO, but I'm interested to see how it ends up

No thanks... With $400, you could buy a pre-built PC with much more power than what they're offering.

Yeah Atari can fuck off I ain't paying almost 400 bucks for a regular ass Linux PC with only 0.46 teraflops in a Atari branded box, with a quite shady development, and many others can agree. This is gonna be a disaster.

Also Atari Vault, which is the 100 built in Atari games, is literally on Steam for 10 bucks and has been for 4 years now, which takes away the majority of the value of the system

You haven't played Pitfall until you've played it at 4K! And $60 per controller? That's just great.

I don't know how to feel about this.
I'm not interested in buying it but many things sound really good.
If the OS is really some sort of Linux then all new games could be installed to a normal PC as well?

The hell were they thinking going for a price point that's only one to two hundred less than PS5 and XBSX are gonna launch at. They're gonna lose so much money on this.

    $390? Are they insane?
Do they think our brains only have a few kilobytes of storage?

    They are.... they're on steam....

400 for this thing is VASTLY over-valuing this system. It's just straight up not worth it, not for a glorified Linux box.

How much is a Nintendo Switch again?

I would get an Atari Mini, not this thing.

I would pay this much for a Comodore 64 like thing, not for this.
