Telltale Games is getting revived

Telltale Games is getting a second chance at life, according to an announcement from LCG Entertainment. The closure of the studio back in 2018 had been sudden, with the reveal of the company's revival being just as out of left field. LCG Entertainment, which is a holding company, has purchased the defunct Telltale Games and all of its remaining assets, trademarks, and intellectual properties. According to the new management, Telltale Games will have a more "streamlined" structure going further, focusing on re-releasing games from the studio's backlog, along with developing new entries for its existing IP's. Some of the developers and workers at Telltale that had been laid off during the demise of the company have been re-hired, though specific names have not been mentioned. While Telltale is known for having created The Walking Dead series of narrative-driven games lightly based on the comic series, the rights to develop further games in that series have expired, and the same goes for Stranger Things. The remaining IPs that are potentially ripe for new entries include Batman, Puzzle Agent, and The Wolf Among Us.

“All of us were big fans of the games Telltale created, as we strongly believe in games as a storytelling medium and nobody did it better,” said Jamie Ottilie, CEO of the new Telltale Games. “Even now, when you see a game with strong narrative, it’s always compared to Telltale, so it’s no surprise that players and industry colleagues alike mourned the studio’s closure. We believe there is still so much life to the brand and its franchises, and we look forward to building upon the company’s storytelling legacy.”

They couldn't have just stayed dead? Seemed like they weren't treating their employees properly before.
The management who were treating employees badly have gone, and aren't being rehired from what I understand. The revived Telltale will be under completely new management, but will have several employees who worked for Telltale previously returning.

Telltale as a company made fantastic games, and don't deserve to die just because their old management made stupid decisions and treated employees badly.

I know people like their games and that is good to hear. Not my cup of tea though.

Does some original TTG staff being hired as freelancers still count as the company being revived? Neither the OP nor the cited source page mentioned anything about this. I just looked this info up myself on other website as oppose to relying on one single source (which btw I hope people aren't actually doing this when doing news story ).

Erm...some heavy skepticism here. Telltale games went bust because they had way too much on their plate. Coming back with the announcement that independent people are buying the rights to sell the old games and basically pick up that (way too heavy) plate with "an undisclosed number of" former employees isn't much to look forward to. As a gamer it's hard to say, but as a realist I've got to say they either have to ditch some projects or face history repeating itself.

We could argue a matter of degree, and a few business wonks get a Chinese/not so local investor to buy a dead brand name is a story seen on multiple occasions as going nowhere particularly interesting (see any number of tool companies, Kodak and more besides). However if they bring back a brand still in public consciousness (and the body is still warm really), presumably the creative forces behind the brand while their skills are still sharp (who doesn't have a IT and/or creative team full of contractors and freelancers? Though I would agree it does add to the fly by night feel) and have continuing doing with extant IPs what they were originally known for as the stated goal then revival seems apt.
Had they used the name to make a new mobile puzzle game company with new people then that would be a different matter.

any chance of a new monkey island game maybe?
Isn't Monkey Island either owned by Disney (after the LucasArts takeover) or Tim Schafer and was just temporarily licenced to Telltale. I doubt they still have the rights!

Saying that, I am still holding out for another season of Back to the Future...

Can they not

Disgusting company that fragments their games. Either sell whole games or don't.
They do exclusively sell the whole games though, not individual fragments. As far as I am aware it is impossible to buy individual episodes (although in the Sam and Max days they did sell them seperately as individual episodes were all completely seperate stories). They just release the episodes to those who bought the season as they make them. It's no different from a season pack of DLC - you get all existing and future content, except that you don't have to also buy a base game seperately.
