hi

i have an EU "new 3ds xl" (metroid returns edition) - unhacked and never been online.
i looked around and was not satisfied wwith the infos i found.
  1. play the original japanese import cart "sega 3d fukkoku archives"
  2. dump my own game "metroid returns", patch it with the trainer and play it. i like trainers, no action replay alternatives please!
what are my options in 2019?
is a softmod possible, i.e. no additional money spending?
do i need to buy a flashcart for (2)?

thanx

1: most CFWs (the leading one is Luma) have built-in region free for 3DS games (allowing them to be launched via the official Home), depending on how intelligent the programmers were that may not be enough and region spoofing will need to be configured (Luma also supports that)

2: is that a DS title? If it is, a flashcard (like the r4ids.cn) is still the best way to play them, especially when antipiracy/hacks/mods/homebrew are involved; there is a software virtualizer (nds-bootstrap, sometimes used with the frontend TwilightMenu++) but compatibility is inferior and especially mods are not the priority; if it is a 3DS program, it can be installed like any other .cia title :)

Yes, most 3DS consoles updated to the newest version can now have CFW installed for free with the "frogminer" method - alternatively you can use "ntrboot" (using a compatible flashcard) which works regardless of the working condition of your console, or "hardmod" (soldering wires to the console to connect it to a PC via an SD reader - actually less flexible than ntrboot but you could happen to already have the right gear)

If your console is on the right older versions, there may be other softmods applicable to your version (the final result is the same)

thank you for your answers

my firmware version is 11.4.0-37E
i have found conflicting information whether that version is hackable or not.

ps: metroid returns is a 3DS title.

Any 2/3DS is hackable.
  • If you have a compatible flashcart, hack the 3DS with ntrboot
  • Else: update to 11.9 for using the free Frogminer method (if you are willing to spend 2€ or already have any DSiWare the sightly easier Fredminer)
I any case refer to the guide:
https://3ds.hacks.guide/
or if you prefer it (I never read it and do not know how good the translation is):
https://3ds.hacks.guide/de_DE/

Good luck
