I used ChoiDujourNX to go to 5.0.2 which worked great and games like Sonic Mania Plus now boot. My problem is that I put in Octopath Taveler (a legit cartridge) and it says "a system update is required". This game is suppsoed to only require 5.0.1. Any thoughts?

Can a mod move this to the right forum then? I wasn't sure where the best place would be to ask a question about CFW and a game requiring a certain version.

Also as a short answer: Seems odd, no idea whats going on there. The most recent game update of that game still should run on 5.0.2 - and I havent got the nerve to trouble shoot you through different steps that end up at "user error", or perhaps new cartridge version of the game (unlikely).

Whats possible is that you missread, and the game is nagging you that there is a "game update available" (1.0.2) - in which case you would still be able to dismiss the nag and play the game.

The reason for that being that more current firmware updates have the most current version of some games known to them, and might do that for some.

Also - helping you to play your games, not a homebrew software or emulation project. Also shouldnt be CFW related (all normal Nintendo stuff of how your Switch is supposed to work - most likely).

Just remembered about update nag and supernag. ;) Both of which only happen, if you went online with the system, without "protection" such as 90DNS (https://gbatemp.net/threads/90dns-dns-server-for-blocking-all-nintendo-servers.516234/). Use this DNS preferably.

Update nag is the newer update already having been downloaded onto your system.
You can get rid of it this way:
https://switch.hacks.guide/blocking-updates.html (read fully)
If that doesnt get rid of it, this is the "if nothing else worked" enhanced version: https://gbatemp.net/threads/how-to-delete-switch-update.499197/#post-7883999 (please get a second opinion on if this works).

Supernag is a "bit" that gets flipped, when the switch is allowed online - that nags you to update as well (second cause), that can be "unset" using this software:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/gag-order-a-fix-for-supernag.505765/ (READ FULLY).

The thing with supernag is, that Nintendo could potentially see, that you've reverted it, and ban you just for that.

Also - if you've been online, and are now getting an update nag because of it, your nand backup will not prevent you from being banned anymore - because Nintendo now probably has records of a more current state of you being online - so once you revert to your nand backup state (and go online) - they will see that you've reverted and could ban you just for that.

90% of people just give you advice from a "you'll probably be banned anyhow" point of view - which makes this whole things so much more managable for idiots who dont read. Next time, use a DNS to block Nintendo getting all the telemetry from your device, flipping bits, downloading updates... You know the stuff you want to prevent?

Idiots guide through this situation is: Just update to most recent firmware (devmenu is not available on 6.0.1 and up, but appart from that, there should be no detriments) and get banned anyhow (if you installed nsps). Then buy second switch for online.

This posting is only viable for you if you _really_ get a "system update available" nag, and not only a game update available nag. Game update available is much easier to solve (install game update as nsp), or ignore (just ignore).

Report your post and ask for it to be moved.

Nintendo will sometimes put new firmware on new carts from the factory. Not sure if that's the case here but just mentioning it.

Hi all, thanks for the suggestions. This switch has never been online and never been connected to wifi. Also the cartridge won't even show up on screen if I hit "Later" so I'm leaning toward perhaps new firmware on the cart? Again Sonic Mania boots just fine.

So I updated my Switch to 6.0.1 with ChoiDujourNX to avoid burning fuses. My Octopath Traveler cart now shows on my home screen without saying an update is required. I went to rip the cart and at the end when it tried to verify the dump against the latest version of the the nswdb.com database it failed. I tried a second rip just to be sure. Looks like there possibly is a new-er Octopath Traveler cart floating out there that requires a later firmware?

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
