What can I do with my switch right now?

1. You can launch homebrew.

What does that mean?

1. Anything that has been made for your firmware version by users and devs can be launched. (emulators, linux ports, whatever).
2. You can also dump your nand for backup reasons and/or key extraction.
3. You can dump your save games and then alter them and inject back into the Switch.

There are many threads on gbatemp in the homebrew section if you want to know what's available for your firmware version right now.

Can I launch CFW?

1. Not really. Not in the traditional sense. I know what your thinking. The only "CFW" that's available right now only adds the Homebrew Launcher from the "gallery screen". You can change it to launch any other homebrew title you want but that's kinda what HBL is for.

Is there a permanent cold boot hack available that doesn't require a Jig and a PC or Android phone to launch payloads?

1. Yes and no. Yes there is a way to make it so you only have to use your Jig one time to enter recovery mode and then you can make a system change that will allow your Switch to boot into recovery mode on every boot without a jig but there are pros and cons to this. Currently there is no way to launch a payload without plugging in the USB C cable to a PC/Mac or an Android phone. So if you set your Switch to cold-boot to RCM then you will always have to have payload ready to go on your USB C device. This makes the Switch not so portable anymore. Plus the auto-RCM process is still new and we don't know what kind of damage or bans it will cause. It's really only for development use right now. I'd steer clear of it.

Can I download and play games I didn't pay for?

1. Nope! It's not possible right now. Period. Team Xecuter has promised a solution that will launch titles but we don't know anything beyond their FAQ's (posted on here, do a search). Their product still hasn't been released.

So how do I do it?

1. Lots of ways. You need a jig. You can make one or order one online. I'd order one.

Can I run homebrew or linux without a jig?

1. Not likely. Only if you have a switch on 1.0.0 and you have a specific Japanese game cartridge.

Can I softmod without a jig?

1. Not likely. Only if you have a switch on 1.0.0 and you have a specific Japanese game cartridge.

So if softmod will never be possible on 4.x.x, and that the jig (or TX SX) is the only way, is there any real value on staying on 4.x.x anymore? I'm getting the feeling that being on 4.x.x or 5.x.x doesn't make any difference.

As of now it makes no difference other than maybe a future entry point on firmwares lower than 5.x.x.

May as well, as I doubt Atmosphere will even work on 4.x.x, much less 5.x.x, so why are people being told to be on the lowest firm possible? Softmods aren't going to happen on them anyway, and if that's the case, yeah, no
real point and just use a modchip.

Thanks for the input guys. I appreciate it. I'll use your input to make this thread better. No need to debate though. I'm not looking for a sticky or nothing. Just something I can quote to new users who insist on making threads for every question.

It's okay if this gets buried. Like I said. I just need something to post when the questions are asked. Please help me make it accurate.

@Kafluke I'm looking forward to your guide when the time comes. Devs do some amazing things, but I also acknowledge the work when it comes to the tutorials, how-to's, walkthroughs, and guides. Your contribution is much appreciated!
Thanks. I appreciate it. I'm just learning right now. I only got my jig a few days ago.

I see, but it says 5.0.1 and not 5.1.0 or 5.x.x, so really, there's a cut off. *Sigh* I was gonna get a game, guess not.
Atmosphere is going to be coming out with EmuNAND support so we can enjoy hacks and use the latest firmware without losing the low firmware on our SysNAND. This is for the potential to get access to the unreleased softmod exploits. If you feel that these may never see the light of a day, okay that's your opinion. There's also nothing equally wrong with giving a community a chance to preserve their low firmware for those who are willing to wait.

@Kafluke You can also do other things with a hacked Switch such as dump/edit/inject saves, dumping your NAND, and playing with a couple of emulators. I think this thread is a good idea and I myself may reference it in the future to those who need some guidance. Thank you and keep up the good work :)

I'm on 4.1.0, not 5.x.x, but that doesn't seem to matter, apparently.

You can try to edit some games manually or use a save editor made by a few people. Run emulators but at slow speed, don't expect anything else

All versions between 1.0.0-4.1.0 will someday get an untethered softmod way of booting into CFW without a jig or AutoRCM. Specifically, you'll probably have to power on your device, load the Homebrew Launcher, and manually boot into CFW. It just might be a long while before that option becomes available for 3.0.1-4.1.0.

Edit: In addition, 1.0.0-3.0.1 might someday in the far future get an untethered coldbood exploit.

If the above isn't worth the wait, there's no reason not to update to the latest version.
