If nothing else works, you could always use injektor to change the built in skin to something of your choice, but you will only be able to have 1 skin at a time and whenever you want to change it you have to change your firmware.

Not to promote my themes but to make sure that the naming is correct, you could try downloading one of my themes which contains all the folders correctly named.

Here you can find my themes:
http://www.ndsthemes.com/index.php?p=browse&user=662f86c126

Direct download link to one of the theme packages:
http://files.bitbank.se/ds_like_calendar_azure.zip

Just copy the themes folder in the zip file into your _system_ folder, overwriting any existing one.
Pressing the select button should change the month of the calendar on the top screen.
Please let me know how it works.

Cheers

The zip files are hosted on my own server so that shouldn't be an issue.
Thanks anyway.

hi guys.. kinda solved things on my end. i guess it kinda has some thing to do with the way the OS renames the filenames and extensions (uppercase/lowercase) when the files are copied to the flash drive. apparently windows xp and in my case, windows 98se do it differently. (reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8.3_filename)

Based on my experience with windows 98, renaming filenames/directories/extension to uppercase and lower case has no effect. Then I used another computer with winxp (sp2) and did the following steps:
- connected the flash drive
- deleted everything in the card (did not even do a format)
- extracted kernel 1.10 to the flashdrive
- extracted a custom theme to a theme folder (theme01)

After that I re-inserted it to the DS and everything worked. When I press "select" at the main menu (games/media/slot2), i get a message:"themeXX press A for manual". Pressed "A" button, and the theme is set.

I can still use the windows 98 system but only for copying ROMs. I think it also causes problems when using moonshell.

HTH.

SUCCESS!!!

thanks for that wikipedia link on 8.3, i hadn't tried different vfat mount options and the "shortname" mount option sounded very promising :

Mount options for vfat

...

shortname=[lower|win95|winnt|mixed]

Defines the behaviour for creation and display of filenames
which fit into 8.3 characters. If a long name for a file exists,
it will always be preferred display. There are four modes:

lower Force the short name to lower case upon display; store a
long name when the short name is not all upper case.

win95 Force the short name to upper case upon display; store a
long name when the short name is not all upper case.

winnt Display the shortname as is; store a long name when the
short name is not all lower case or all upper case.

mixed Display the short name as is; store a long name when the
short name is not all upper case.

The default is "lower".

#############################################################

after reading the info at venerable wikipedia it sounded like the microsd needed to be mounted with the winnt option [since people with XP seem to not have problems] so after remounting the microsd via:

# mount -t vfat -o shortname=winnt /dev/sda1 /mnt/nds

i then nuked the contents of /mnt/nds and copied the kernel back and can now finally SWITCH SKINS. thanks to all who replied, i never would've figured this out without help.
