Indeed. The only close source software I use on my computer is CLion (I'm transitioning to KDevelop) and Steam (and most games on it).

I'm not saying that I won't use anything that's not open source, just that I distance myself from it and barely use it.

The homebrew community functions with open and free documentation and code. It's not much of a contribution to use free info/docs/tools to make a close source solution to something. Sure, it takes lots of work and ingenuity, but if every dev in the homebrew community did it, we'd be nowhere.

@cell9 I just wanted you to know I appreciate your work and look forward to future advancements. I even just bought a New 3DS a short while ago just because of your streaming feature and would be sad if you gave up on NTR.

The streaming feature might become an independent tool, which was released in 3dsx format without the need of cia installers. It should be better.

However this project might be discontinued for such situation.

I think what he's saying is that he, like I and many others, believe the project should be open sourced and the fact that someone tried to blackmail you is irrelevant, albeit unfortunate as it is.

As for that old situation with Devolution, you're right, nobody blackmailed him, but nobody really talks about Devolution anymore without mentioning the crazy backlash he got over his choice to make it both closed source and anti-piracy. Caused quite a stir on this site back when it first happened, floods of threads and posts, almost as bad as the current Gateway situation is now.

The difference here is that most of the people that want your tool open sourced want you to do so out of principle, and for the benefit of the community as a whole. The people that want your source code for the good it can do for the community greatly outnumber the few that are doing it for purely selfish reasons.

And the good some of the talented coders in this community could do with the source code to a powerful tool like NTR is as it stands greatly outweighs the bad that some selfish morons who tried to bully and blackmail you ever could.

If you never choose to make it open, that's completely up to you, but like I said before, a lot of us good people would appreciate it.

That would be up to you but I hope that it doesn't come out exclusively as a 3dsx format. Based on all my prior knowledge it would preclude streaming a lot of stuff like the home menu and games with updates would not use the updates. Not to mention the bad boot rate just to get into the HBL.

I always prefer cia homebrew and now only use 3dsx for one time stuff like installing a9lh and dumping dspfirm.

I'm a little confused on your wording, did you think I was blackmailing you? I was just saying I hope if you segregate the streaming that you also have a cia option for using it not just exclusively 3dsx.

@cell9 It's sad to see you go. Your contributions made an impact to the community that reached far and wide, and while I do prefer source releases over binary blobs, you have your reasons, and I respect that.

I'm not going to ask for source, since I know your stance on the matter. However, would you be willing to document any of the inner workings of NTR, in a similar way to how @shinyquagsire23 talks about remote joypad control and input redirection over WiFi?
If not, I think it shouldn't be too hard to figure out how it works - the video streaming bit does seem to depend on the RPC socket for transferring blocks of memory (framebuffer, for instance), and it doesn't seem compressed - there are ways that the community could improve frame rates and video quality, once we get working on it.

Also, what would your opinion be, on if the community independently replicated some features of NTR - such as the video streaming, plugin support, home menu OSD, and RPC/debugging socket, in their own free-source effort?

P.S.: BSODStyle was pretty neat, not gonna lie. I use it. \o/
