Hello everyone, first time poster here.

I just purchased a 3ds xl and it is software version 8.1.0-19U.

I want to be able to play backups of DS and 3DS games using a flash cart and I have some questions.

1. Is the R4i gold 3DS starter card all I need, or do I need the more expensive R4i Gold 3DS Deluxe edition? I read that:

gateway 3ds - to play 3DS and DS backups if firmware is v 4.1 to v4.5
r4i gold 3ds deluxe - to play 3DS and DS backups if firmware is > v4.5 (which mine is since it's v 8.1.0-19U)
R4i gold 3ds starter - can only black DS backups

Looks like the r4i gold 3ds deluxe is the way to go based on my system being v8.1.0-19U?

2. Also if I connect the 3DS to the internet, will it prompt for automatic updates and if so, how do I disable this?
3. Is a newer version of the software required to run newer games? If so, what is the work around for this? Edit: I read that I won't have to update my system NAND. Install emuNAND (is this the latest and greatest?) which I can use to update to the latest firmware. This allows my main firmware to always stay 9.2 or less while I can update emuNAND to play the latest games

"With no browser" do you mean that you want to use rxTools without having to use the browser or do you mean that you DON'T HAVE A BROWSER? The former can be done by updating sysnand to 9.2 by using rxTools Dev Mode + sysupdater and use Menuhax, the later can't be done.

1) You can play 3DS backups for free using rxTools, for DS games you only need R4i Gold 3DS or some other $10 DS mode flashcart.

2) No, it will prompt you to update only if you put tge system to sleep while you are connected to a network but it won't obligate you to.

3) Yes, games obligate you to update to be used, however you can install emuNAND and update it up all tge way to the latest firmware with rxTools so you don't have to worry about that.

Install HBL in emunand, launch it and use Hans to open the games, that way you'll be able to take ingame screenshots.

To go home you'll have to exit the game first by pressing L + R + DOWN + B and then exit HBL.

i've got an old 3ds(xl) with fw 3.1.0-6E on it and want to play 3ds backups (don't really care about eshop/gba etc). i also want to avoid gateway/sky3ds, so this only leaves cfw, but i've got some questions:

1. fw: should i just update to 4.5 via any retail game or are there any benefits going higher?
2. cfw version: honestly i'm a bit confused and there does'nt really seem to be a "best" option. i'd really want emunand and some sort of futureproofing. from what i've read, rxtools has ceased development and was given over to pasta. should i run the old rxtools, newer pasta or can you recommend any other options (cakes?)
3. which is the easiest/most reliable installation vector atm? i've got an old r4i card for DS roms, should i just use that method?

You'll need to use a save dongle to install OoTHax (you'll also need the Homebrew Launcher).

I've never actually done the following, as all of the 3DSes I've used had the browser, so I'm guessing here:
Set up CtrBootManager to work with the Homebrew Launcher. You'll need to place its boot.3dsx inside /3ds/<create a folder>/ on your SD card. I'm not sure if the boot.cfg file will still go on the root of your SD card, or will go inside the folder with the boot.3dsx. One of those should work.

Set up rxTools with your SD card and download this file. Set up CtrBootManager's boot.cfg file to launch the rxtools.3dsx file (you can edit boot.cfg with any text editor). RxTools should boot. Again, I haven't actually tested this, so I'm not 100% sure that it will work.

1. Since you have the browser, you can update to any firmware between 4.1 and 9.2. If you want to use the MSET exploit, go for 4.X.

2. Pasta CFW has actually ceased development while rxTools is still being developed. RxTools was given to the Pasta team, but they are continuing to develop it as rxTools. RxTools is a good choice for CFW.

3. The actual installation methods don't vary, it's only the entrypoints that do. The MSET (aka DS profile) exploit is probably the easiest when you're first modding your 3DS. If that's not an option the internet browser works fine.

No, you only need the Gateway launcher to set up emuNAND and to create a NAND backup.

Hello guys, i just bought a New 3DS with 9.0 E fw, and i would like to set up emuNAND before i install any CFW, any help on how should i do this correctly? so many tutorials on this site it gets confusing...i tried the method with Launcher.dat from the Gateway fw, i copied it to the root of my SD card then i went to the http://go.gateway-3ds.com site but it just says Gateway 3DS is loading... and doesn't do anything else.

No, there is no way to downgrade them other than having a backup made when they where on 9.2 or lower.

3) rxTools and it's free, follow the tutorial from above.
4) You can play GB/GBC/GBA/SNES at full speed with a CFW, you only need a cheap $10 flashcartfor DS games.

No, You can even run it in 4.x
What's your whole firmware? EX: 7.1.0-10U

When I try running MH4U through HANS I keep getting "invalidated icache"
It works on every other game I try except this (my favorite game) so please help?

RX-S is sysnand, not emunand. But yeah you are using rxTools.

RX-E is emunand.

Do you have the "data base does not exist" problem? If you unlinked your NANDS you have to create the title.db and import.db files, then repair them again.

Dude, in the picture you posted I can clearly read:

You have to create the title.db and import.db files, then repair them again in sysnand folders.
