Hello,

I need some advise from you Wii experts and hackers. If my specific case is already documented somewhere I am happy if you point me to the thread and I will read. I have done some research but have not found a solution which fits my situation.

What I have:
- a second hand Wii, from around 2006/7
- JP version (has Japanese booklet, I was told by former owner, Japanese UI)
- semi bricked (can't access system settings)
- mod chip (can play copied DVD game)
- I don't know the exact CFW version, MAC address

I like to:
- unbrick Wii
- install HBC
- change to English UI
- play copied games from USB-HD, DVD, SD

What is the best cause of action? (and the least chance of fully bricking the Wii)

I'm very grateful for any help for this specific case, thanks a lot!

PS
I read the advise to get the MAC address from downloading a save game and examine it with fe100 key grabber, then use that to get letterbomb and install HBC.

Or use original Nintendo game to install latest system again (difficult as original Japanese game is hard to come by here)

Or install new System Menu WAD with a prog via SD or DVD.

...

What do you mean semibricked? You can go into the menu but you can't go into the system menu? If you can run games then you should install HBC via Smash Stack and then install bootmii as boot2 and priiloader.

I'm not sure if this will work, but you can download a new System Menu via ModMii and install it via a Wad Manager.
And ModMii can handle pretty much all your Wii modding needs.

You're in a tough spot if you don't know your MAC address, your SM version, or have HBC. do you have priiloader, bootmii/boot2, or a NAND backup (i assume no to all)? to fix: you either need to 1. reinstall the system menu to match your wii's region, or 2. do a proper region change to get rid of the semi-brick.

to do 1., you need a game from your wii's region with a system menu version higher than what's currently on your wii (not possible if you're on 4.3)...though you have a modchip, so you could download an appropriate game with an update partition and see if it works. (you can check to see if a games update partition is present with wii backup manager).

to do 2., you need a way to launch homebrew. bannerbombv1 wont work since you can't access settings. game based exploits wont work since you have no way of copying the required exploit game save into your console. bannerbombv2 could work if you're on 4.0 - 4.2 (if you have priiloader, BBv2 can also be made to work on 4.3). if you can find your MAC as you described (i didn't know that was an option since you can't access your game saves to offload one), letterbomb/wilbrand is an option.

once you have HBC, install IOS236 (you can get wilbrand, Hackmii installer, BBv2, IOS236 installer via modmii). then you can do a proper region change ('RC' from Modmii main menu).

if i ponder this awhile more, maybe something more will come to me. anyone else, feel free to jump in here if i've missed something painfully obvious. once upon a time i thought there was a way to get into the save data of a semi-bricked wii, but the method has escaped me.

EDIT: if you're on 4.0 or greater, you'll have the SD menu on your wii menu. try BBv2 before anything else. if it works great, if it doesn't, you have SM4.3. if you have 4.3, then option 1. is off the table since a disc update won't overwrite 4.3.

If you are connected to the internet, then you can scan for the Wii's MAC using a network scanner and use letterbomb. Or just use Smash Stack to install HBC since it doesn't need access to save files.
