The English version has exactly 10 more voice clips than the Japanese one.
Haha I was about to say that the voices are ten boxes ahead.. I counted them while comparing the text with the voices, haha...

Nice to see the community spirit in trying to get this all fixed. I just myself got to the part where the voices start to go out of sync... pretty confusing since I was also trying to follow along with my very basic knowledge of Japanese :\

I'll give this new method a try tomorrow though, when I have some time. Otherwise, I suppose another option is a "nodub" version, which is what I had to do with Megaman ZX Advent, since that game had a similar, but more frequent, problem like this one.

Just tried xiude's method with a save game at hour 12. Unless I did something wrong, it doesn't work.

I just got a bit further into the game (Tehah Village) and it started dysncing. seems the one true way to get a proper undub, will be to correct pointers in ds_data_vow.sdat
with that fixed up, everything should become much simpler, unfortunatly doing pointers is byond my ability XD

@sara-chan
if fixing the pointers worked, mind posting a mini FAQ for people to fix the syncing issue if they are feeling brave

fortunatly, if you tried my patch, and got a decent way into the game, the save file is compatable with the original E dump, so you wont lose any gameplay

lord have mercy!

that girl that does the voice is very bad at her craft.

The dude who did the main char voice needs to stop the helium sucking.

A JP re-dub is a must!

Sorry if I sound really noob but I have a question about the undubbing. Is it possible to just take out the voices entirely leaving only the music and sound effects from the japanese version. I prefer to play Suikoden the way I always have. What files would I have to take out and keep in etc.

edit: After giving it some thought, its possible if you replaced the voice overs with white noise. But that's probably a little too complicated a solution.

I think just deleting the voice files would work. I did that with Megaman ZX and it worked fine. Actually, it seemed to load faster as well, so it was a bonus both ways.

The voice work is in the ds_data_vow.sdat file right?

That wouldn't work very well. It also holds the intro music as well. When it boots up, the game specifically looks for the files.

Using the (J) version ends up like the (E), it's out of sync start when meeting with the mage lord, and there's an issue with the company name, it's not VWF.

I tried modified ds_data_hed.sdat, the only things that changes is BGMs, footsteps, and menu clicks.

Sara-Chan, which file did you hack? Can you explain more?
Thank You

Wish I could help with getting the undub to work, unfortunatly I don't know anything about these things. But other than the bad VO the fonts for some characters was also pure crap, and that's something I could do something about. I didn't do much, only fixed the crappy M, m, W, w characters to be more easily readable.

WARNING: I have only tried it on a new game, and only playing for a couple of minutes. It worked without problems for that, but I have no knowledge of the technical or programmatical implications that using this font file can cause under some special circumstances. The only possible problem I can think of would be faulty line wrapping, since I gave M, W, m, w one extra pixel width, but I think there would have to be some heavy use of those characters for that to happen. Anyways, hope someone dares try it out, makes text more pleasant to read. :END WARNING

INSTRUCTIONS: Well, most people in here probably already knows how to but for those who don't, here's the instructions.

1. Tools Needed.

a. DSbuff (or similar app capable of unpacking/repacking NDS roms)

2. The New Font.

a. http://www.mediafire.com/?kymzmcng0yu

3. Switching the font.

a. Unpack your rom using DSbuff
b. Put the new font file in \\data\font\
c. Overwrite your old file
d. Repack your rom using DSbuff

Finished

Thanks to DarthNemesis for his tool NFTRedit, great tool.

Going back to the subject of sounds in Suikoden Tierkreis.
I have tried to open them in CrystalTile2 but both sound_data_vow and sound_data_hed gives no table
of resources in them, but the sound_data.sdat does. Should I take this as meaning that sound_data.sdat
in uncompressed or compressed using a compression that CrystalTile2 knows, and the _vow and _hed.sdat
are compressed? I would really like to help, so if anyone could point me to some webpages I need to read
through to be able to get some useful information out of the sound_data_vow.sdat I would really appreciate it.

interesting. since i would assume from looking at it that the font used in this game is monotype (each character is the same width, like Courier New). I figured that's why those letters looked so awful. I've decided to just put up with it for now I think.

There isn't a fixed width. Since they are using the same character map as the jap version I'm guessing the localization team was just lazy. The character map contains western alphabet, Hiragana, Katakana and some Kanji.

In it's default form they have these widths:

Western alphabet: 4px
Hiragana: 6-9px
Katakana: 6-9px
Kanji: 9px

So each character can be anywhere between 0-10px wide. Western alphabets meager 4px width is most likely because the japanese dev team didn't have much use for it.

(EDIT: well, they were sticking to a fixed width for the western alphabet, but what I mean is that there is no NEED to stick to 4px width)

But for what changing, the Text is okay the sound is the problem.
To unpack the ds_data_vow.sdat and pack it again would make more sense and it´s not difficult at all.
But if this works like it should (without syncing problem) is another question

For the ds_data_vow.sdat: (it have a own format that´s why you can´t open it with CrystalTile2)

@nixx

The font is an entire different problem. We can fix it, so why not.
