How do you feel about people charging money for game mods that use copyrighted material?

There are some game mods that use copyrighted material that I wanted to get. I see a lot of people criticizing the modders and I understand the legality issue but it is difficult for me to see a moral issue. These mods do not harm the game makers in the way piracy usually does and in fact they might even encourage the sale of the original game. Some of them also take tons of work to make. I have seen places with a lot of harsh criticism for modders who do this and although I understand the point in regard to legality, morally speaking this seems totally different than standard piracy or disturbing the game itself. I am not excusing these mods or anything, I just want to know opinions because I was considering paying for a couple that looked like a lot of work but am not sure if that is "wrong" in a moral sense or how I should feel about it.

Context? Platform? Hardware? Software? Who is charging for mods for what??

Never seen or paid for any mod for any game on a system i have used.
Game mods like AI upscaled textures for $10. I'm not sure about the legalities of this, but I'm 100 percent certain that this is not only fraud, but you're selling copyrighted materials without the consent from the company making them.

I've never seen this 'market' and it's just preying on idiots who are paying it.

Personally I don't give a shit about HD or sooper dooper resolutions, I'm from the 80s! :rofl2:

I don't have a problem with piracy, and I don't have a problem with modders receiving money either.

What I find questionable is putting paywalls or other proprietary restrictions your mod. It just goes against the spirit of modding.

On the other hand, money talks.

I don't even like some of the free mods sometimes.

Valve added a shitty grainy texture filter over every texture in Half-Life 2 a few years ago, and it still pains me to play the game with the newly-ugly textures. I think it was the Steampipe update or whatever it was. But it sucks. And since the game stay auto-updated, I can't just install HL2 from disc and have it stay that version.
