Sony is reportedly developing a new handheld console

plasysation.png

With the Nintendo Switch being such a runaway success, and having a successor console on the way, it looks like an old rival might be throwing their hat back into the ring. An insider report from Bloomberg states that Sony is looking to contend in the portable gaming market, and thus, are in the early stages of creating a new handheld device. Supposedly, the concept builds upon the PlayStation Portal, but would, "function as a standalone device like Valve Corp.’s Steam Deck". Bloomberg notes that the release of such a PlayStation-branded handheld would be "years away", or could never be fully realized.

The product is aimed at expanding Sony’s reach and contending with Nintendo Co. for the portable gaming market, according to people familiar with its development. It would also counter any potential mobile hardware from Xbox maker Microsoft Corp., which is working on prototypes in the category as well. Sony’s portable device is likely years away from launch and the company could still decide against bringing it to market, the people said, asking not to be named discussing private plans.

I don't think they can pull off another handheld. I mean they gotta come full force with exclusives otherwise the Switch2 will just be the better choice.

It's not even exclusives. The best indie games on steam take years if they ever get there. Unless they're really smart and give steam capability, it's gonna suck.

I hope it plays PS4 games

We're going into the next gen of consoles in roughly, what, 2 years? 2 and 1/2 at most? This thing had better be as powerful and as versatile as the PS5 if it's going to succeed. I shit you not.

That seems pretty hard to do. Steam deck is pretty much ps4 power and it's console priced.

Well, if they want to make a powerful handheld, they're going to have to COMPETE. Portal has no competition because it's just a streaming device, which means SONY has not "learned" anything from it. If it's relatively the same as the Switch, Ally & and SteamDeck, it will fail, (not to mention it will have to have a shitload of exclusives). It needs to be UBER POWERFUL and totally unique. And remember, if MS is building a handheld unit, I'm betting it will be serious competition for the handheld market, it's just a matter of what they do with it...

Hard to expect anything from Sony after they pretty much ditched the Vita , PSVR1&2

They've got an ugly history in hand-held gaming, that's for sure. I have several modded VITA's, and I use them ALL THE FUCKING TIME. Like somebody else in this thread mentioned, we are ever-so-grateful for what the modding community has done with the Vita. It's got a TON of life in it, and I could not be happier to be a part of that community, and THIS community.

Fuckin' A!!!

Doubtful, they just saw valve and Asus success with them it'll probably be a 7" oled display, 24gb ddr5, custom rdna 2, 2280 m.2, vr capable to boost psvr2 sales, typical Playstation ui, cloud gaming to boat and like all the others. Vita XL.

The Portal's screen size is 8". This is now the STANDARD for every other manufacturer looking to make a hand-held device AFTER THE PORTAL WAS REALEASED. It took a bit for Valve to finally go OLED, but it's not like they're going to go back to an LCD screen moving forward. The current LCD will expire in a few years. In fact, probably a year from right now. If you're going to spend money on a KILLER FUCKING HAND-HELD, GET THE OLED. I will bet that any of these cats making a hand-held gaming platform will have an 8 inch screen. Sony, MS, Steam (going forward) and ROG. 7 might be "new", but it's been bested by a console that is selling well, much better than a lot of us thought it would (PORTAL).

IMHO.

Understandable. I did try to warn others about this cartridge, but they didn't listen to me or anybody else about the EZ-Flash and bought them anyways, only to realise that they wasted their money.

@anotherthing, It acts kinda the same way as an Ace3DS+ cartridge, because it uses the commonly known Wood kernel as a base.

I have three EZ Flash Omega/DEs and I really was thinking that the EZ Flash Parallel would work similar to how the Omega worked. Where it recognizes the file extension and loads that file accordingly.

  • A @ anotherthing:
To play an NES game on the EZ Flash Omega, you just toss it on the SD card and select it from the menu and it loads it in to the NES emulator.

The EZ Flash Parallel just works like every single other card I have.

I can walk her through how to do something like loading an NES game on a $10 cartridge.
