Sony is reportedly developing a new handheld console

With the Nintendo Switch being such a runaway success, and having a successor console on the way, it looks like an old rival might be throwing their hat back into the ring. An insider report from Bloomberg states that Sony is looking to contend in the portable gaming market, and thus, are in the early stages of creating a new handheld device. Supposedly, the concept builds upon the PlayStation Portal, but would, "function as a standalone device like Valve Corp.’s Steam Deck". Bloomberg notes that the release of such a PlayStation-branded handheld would be "years away", or could never be fully realized.

The product is aimed at expanding Sony’s reach and contending with Nintendo Co. for the portable gaming market, according to people familiar with its development. It would also counter any potential mobile hardware from Xbox maker Microsoft Corp., which is working on prototypes in the category as well. Sony’s portable device is likely years away from launch and the company could still decide against bringing it to market, the people said, asking not to be named discussing private plans.

Time for Sony to come up with yet another overpriced proprietary storage.

But if they do things right, a proper sony handheld would slap.

i would be interested in this if it focuses on offline content mostly. if its tied to a bunch of online stuff and forces online features upon the user then its hard pass for me. i prefer to play 99% offline content.
Nothing is offline, if it can be online. That's why we have refrigerators that connect to the internet. Sony wants that data.

Tbh, I have zero hope that Sony will make anything good in that regard, they have become trend chasers, it's so sad, I hope Nintendo and Valve will crush any competition in the handheld market, we don't need Sony and Microsoft trying to push down their boring industry practices in that market...

Even if their device would get hacked, I would probably not be interested in buying it...

If this is genuinely true, then a couple things I have to say.

1. If this is just going to be another Steam Deck, much like it was mentioned being similar to that system, then I am already bored with it. The Steam Deck isn't a bad system, but it's literally just a standard computer with built-in controls, it certainly is a handheld, but it isn't a console. I handle computers quite often already, there's nothing spectacular or special about them. They may boast more power and extra features like ray tracing and all, but quite honestly if you have multiple computers, whether it be laptops, standard towers, thin clients, etc., it really feels like the same stuff, just a different form factor. Computers just aren't that special anymore, it's to the point anything "advanced" just comes off excessive and redundant anymore, and you end up paying your soul just to get to any of it anyways. Even the Xbox Series X | S and PlayStation 5 are kind of on the border of being just as boring, because they aren't far from being a standard computer.

Just waiting for the day when they make computer hardware, don't supply the software, and just tell you that's a console, install Windows, MacOS, or Linux on that and call it a day. That's boring as hell.

2. If Sony does end up treating this like a genuine handheld console (not a damn standard computer in handheld form), then DO NOT ABANDON IT LIKE THE VITA. Give the hardware proper attention and support.

I'm kind of worry that they will just make it digital games only. I wonder if they will take cues from Switch/2 and have detachable controllers. I'm sure they want to be able to just throw their existing games onto the portal, instead making specific portal games like the Vita. I wonder if they are going to design it with the PS6 in mind.

Cue the proprietary memory card and charging cable.
Reminds me of PlayStation Portal lack of Bluetooth.

playstation portal PRO confirmed
PSP Pro? PSPP?

Please don't buy a Samsung "smart" refrigerator, the parts that go into the actual refrigerator are cheap and break down easy. Samsung appliances are garbage, and break down easy.

Don't they have that remote-only gadget? What's the point of making another one (or copying others' homework) besides disappointing the general handheld crowd again?

Hopefully is uses standard MicroSD cards or it’s doomed off the bat
Don't worry, Sony isn't stupid enough to shoot themselves in the same foot twice. They'll just find a way to shoot themselves in the other foot.

My bet is on some kind of subscription shenanigans.

I honestly don't think it’s “stupidity,” I think it’s pride. Sony has a VERY long history of pushing their proprietary products. Maybe this time they will learn their lesson, but I honestly won’t be shocked if they just made it have built in memory like phones do and just push for higher memory models. Just something in my gut tells me Sony’s pride will either be proprietary memory or built in memory, just to avoid bending the knee to microSD cards

Please, title this episode as:

Handheld "wars", return of the copy-cats.

Please Sunny, bring us Vita 2 with awesome specs and abandon it asap (the earlier the better).

So the scene can bring us something worth it with good games and ports.

This is all I wait from this episode. <fingers-crossed>

What appeal is there really in another portable system locked into Sony's ecosystem? With Steam Deck you get Playstation games, Xbox games, PC games, and wide emulation compatibility. Heck, I'd bet on even Steam Deck 2 being out before they have anything of substance to show.

Didn't they pull all 1st party support from the Vita after just 2 years?

Actually unforgivable and people tend to just either not remember or not even know this.
I think they pretend to make psn ps4 games playable in some kind of "handheld" in future.

I hope it's hackable like psp.

I don't think they can pull off another handheld. I mean they gotta come full force with exclusives otherwise the Switch2 will just be the better choice.

It's not even exclusives. The best indie games on steam take years if they ever get there. Unless they're really smart and give steam capability, it's gonna suck.
