I burned a disk with an iso of GT3 and it doesn't read it. It reads PS1 backups fine, and reads genuine PS2 disks fine. Do I need to do something extra for matrix to recognise a bakcup ps2 title?

1) What Modchip version are you using? matrix v1.91
2) hard mod matrix v1.91
3) What model is your PS2 console (exact model number)? SCPH-75004
4) If reporting issues with a game, provide the following: complete Game Title, Game ID, and MD5 Checksum. Gran Turismo 3
5) And what device (i.e. Disc tray, USB, HDD, or SMB) are you loading the game from? DVD

My experience is that PS2's (both phat and slim) are quite picky which DVD+/-R's it reads, especially when the laser is not new anymore. Try different brands of discs and different burners. And don't burn them on the maximum speed.

Does it play those discs if burned with a DVD movie on it? If it doesn't, then it's probably a disc reading issue and not a modchip one.

Verbatim isn't a guarantee it will work on the PS2. I have some burners which just burns discs not recognised on some PS2's.

The Matrix modchip should not require additional steps to boot PS2 backups when installed correctly.

You can try holding the "Select" button when turning one with a PS2 backup already inserted and see if it can fast boot into it.

Yep. I remember that I had a bunch of copies that would read perfectly on my PS2 but wouldn't boot on my friend's one. We only found that out AFTER we had wasted quite a bit of discs.
@duskfall you should try all available burning speeds of your discs to see if that's the issue. Also, I think that setting the book type to DVD-ROM when using DVD+R also helped.

I have decided to respectfully give up on the fb marketplace PS2 after trying everything and nothing working.
I am getting my japanese PS2 modded by a professional.
Thank you all for your suggestions.
