Citra 3DS emulator is also shutting down development, GitHub repo taken down

emu.png

Quietly following on the heels of the injunction ruling against Yuzu emulator that resulted in its removal and ceased development, popular Nintendo 3DS emulator Citra is following suit. Yuzu's parent company, Tropic Haze LLC, is also the owner of the development team for Citra 3DS emulator, and because of the recent ruling, Citra has also met the same fate. As of current writing, Citra has been removed from download on its official website, and the Citra GitHub repository has been taken down as well.

An official statement from Bunnei, a representative for both Citra and Yuzu, was posted on the Discord channel for Yuzu, saying that they never intended to allow piracy to impact Nintendo, and that playing games on "unauthorized hardware" is harmful, so development on both emulators will cease as of today. Citra's Discord server has also locked itself down, following the announcement.

Nintendo was smart, who cares even if they wouldn't have won in court they scared everyone off and got a settlement out of it.

It pays to sue, I guess.
Hurts the community but at the same time I can't blame them. Especially with the Yuzu team kinda bragging about stuff behind the scenes in the past.

They settled, the case is done. Unfortunately, Nintendo got what they actually wanted
Truthfully the case not going to court is for the best. If Nintendo won it could have set a very very bad precedent for the future.

And get fucked by Nintendo too? I highly doubt anyone with a brain would do it.
Here's how to not get frigged by Nintendo when developing an emulator:

Keep your mouth shut, don't accept donations, recruit close friends who won't snitch only, and finally, upload anonymously.

But I can understand a need for clout and money for your hard work.

That’s ANYTHING that involves Nintendo AND Take2.

That is not really a viable way of developing an emulator, it isn't like "release once, it's all done", you have to maintain it in the long term, therefore the most logical option is to make it open source and easily accessible. Also, I don't get what exactly is wrong with emulators getting donations?

Bummer, I hoped Yuzu developers would fight all way to US Supreme Court to have their judges to issue the ruling on emulators.

Nintendo's attack on emulators could lead to severe consequence, such as dangerous cyberattack on all of Nintendo's infrastructure like happened to Sony in 2011.
personally i WANT THAT TO HAPPEN and I'll have 0 sympathy when nso crashes to nintendo or the users who enable that greed machine

goddamnit.
This is the WORST THING I HAVE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE.

Considering that Citra was the only real, stable Nintendo 3DS emulator that existed...

just... GODDAMNIT.

F*CKING BULLSH*T NINTENDO, CAN YOU PLEASE CALM DOWN WITH YOUR DMCA'S?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I'm sorry if my comment was misleading. My "guide" was solely for covering your tracks so that Nintendo cannot find you, but like you said it would be very difficult to do so.

This is the worst thing I've seen all day. My parents broke my 3DS because I was being impatient on Wii WADs and wanted to take my 3ds to my car the other day and it led to my parents breaking my 3DS. I'm so mad right now. Here's the story:

Quite pathetic to say at least...

...are you calling for another wave of identity theft for people who probably just wanted to play games with their friends (some on Family Memberships)?

I really wish they didn’t cave to Nintendo. I hope more people pick up piracy because fuck the Big N
well now it will be more popular than ever is my guess.
good word travel far, but bad one even farther.
I think nintendo shoot themself in a foot with this one (even more this time).

Instead of peacefull coexistance with people that made their fortune, they decided to go into war with them. lol.
they are so smart (not really).

Were talking about a $65bn company VS a small team of devs, it's not caving it's them not wanting to spend the rest of their life in prison over emulation.
Prison? For what exactly? it's a civil case. A lost lawsuit is just a debt. A debt that's dischargeable through bankruptcy if necessary. You can't get arrested or convicted of a crime for not paying a lawsuit judgement.

Failure to appear can lead to a warrant arrest, if they do in fact sniff around and find piracy on their servers they acquired money for then yes they could get prison time.

Didn't they already get mostly every game working fully for Citra? I think I had to use a special build to beat Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon but most games worked IIRC.

That's not how civil cases work. If you don't appear they'll just rule in favor of the party that did appear most times.

I had some medical debt that I didn't pay in Virginia after I moved back to Texas and they sued me for it. I didn't appear and it ended up as a judgment on my credit. No warrant for my arrest or anything.

Wonderful! So because the Yuzu team didn't listen to the rest of the emulation community (I'm talking about the Patreon stuff) now we don't have an actively developed 3DS emulator. I understand stopping development of Yuzu because of the lawsuit but this seems a bit like going too far, I could see a fork coming up by other people as long as they don't make the same mistakes.

By the way, wasn't the new 3DS emulator Mikage supposed to be released soon™? We're going to need it more than ever...

EDIT: BTW, Bunnei's message seems like something that was written by their lawyer to make Nintendo happy, it's one of the most fake PR things I read in a while. You also needed keys extracted from a 3DS to make it do anything at all, this is ridiculous.
