Tencent shows off mock-up of its cloud gaming controller with interchangeable parts

Tencent has just wrapped up its annual conference, where it showed off a handful of new games heading to the mobile platform. Some of these reveals included Metal Slug Mobile, CrossFire HD, and Digimon: New Century. The most important announcement wasn't the set of games, but rather, the input device used to play said titles. Tencent has unveiled its new cloud gaming controller, revealing a mock-up of the concept, which features a gamepad that has a swappable face, letting you seamlessly switch between different types of layouts. One of the styles shown is a traditional, modern ABXY design with two flat circle pads, along with a round, X-shaped "d-pad", while the second option has a much more complex layout involving five circle pads, mimicking a type of layout frequently seen in mobiles games such as Diablo Immortal, Genshin Impact, or Tencent's own Honor of Kings. The controller will be a major part of the company's cloud gaming service, which will not only stream console games to players, but also mobile phone games. Since the gamepad will have modular parts, it helps it cater to both sides of the market in Tencent's homeland of China, which happens to have a major focus on mobile game experiences.

The problem with Cloud Gaming is reach; in Google's own Labs it most likely worked great enough for their Executives to sign off on it, but it cannot sustain the same speeds on the scale of Internet they want to market to.

That said, if South Korea launched a national Cloud Gaming service, I would have zero doubts it could run 4K 60FPS with the amount of Internet infrastructure they currently own.

With Tencent and their local push, I also don't doubt their Cloud Gaming will launch at China's Megalopolises first, which have more Population than most Countries thus more Commercial Viability.

i dont hate chinese people or culture. i hate their government.
People hate China not because Uyghurs, not because Hong Kong, not because the human rights, not even because their dictatorship.

They just hate China because they use the "socialist" label.

If they were a monarchy, a far right military dictatorship or whatever, people would give them a pass for every single violation.

It makes sense that, in the future, if you buy or rent an Apartment in China's Megalopolises, it comes with a Fibre-Optic connection that has several Cloud Gaming Subscriptions available.

If we're talking along the lines of Hardware Availability for major Consoles like the Sony PlayStation, it stands to reason that a Software-only arm of their Company would open a whole exclusive, localised Cloud Service if the local demand is high.

There are only a few Cities in the World large enough to make that venture work and not spread the Company's Logistics too thin; China has the lion's share of said verticalities.

Nah, I hate them because they're literally genociding people because of their religious beliefs, and other countless human right's violations. I don't give a shit about their "pseudo communism".

I don't think so. I hate China because of the numerous human rights violations that is essentially due to socialism and the dictatorship. Especially since I'm a Tunisian (we lived under a very harsh dictatorship before 2011 revolution for 23 years and everyone who didn't lick boots was put in jail including a lot of my family members)

Not the first company to present a modular controller, but these things never get popular, so I'd expect it to either stay as a mock-up or be released to a niche market in limited quantities with only 1 or 2 faceplates.

it kind of sucks because modular controllers are a great idea, but they almost never catch on

I wonder if they realize people don't want cloud gaming.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

ok but why is it cloud gaming
none of the big tech companies ever thought of joining the gaming industry until cloud gaming became a thing
now they all want to get in on it
It reminds me of the early 90s when suits all wanted their company to make a console, almost all of them were huge failures since they didn't understand the market. These CEOs think streaming games is a brilliant idea that gamers will love, so so wrong.

Erm...I'll see what actually comes of this (EDIT: the controller, that is...I don't have an opinion on whatever else they do). I liked the idea...I mean: handheld, battery, receiver and some stuff can work independent of the actual input. The modularity could ensure that everyone has a controller that works best for him or her.

...but on the other hand: the wii did the exact same thing, and how many uses did that end up with? The nunchuck was the main "go to" because it came with the system, the classic was the "alternative" for the die hard wii gamers (which was an oxymoron, if we're honest) and the remote plus was one that should have been in the system to begin with. And that's a world renowned gaming company.

I'm not saying tencent is a small company, but I don't think they've got the weight to make a dent in what's conceived as "what players want as game controllers".
