I don't really like it when people use gendered terms like "man up" or "don't be such a girl". Like, girls can be strong and men can be fragile and there's nothing wrong with that

That's exactly what I was talking about. We're not supposed to like it, quite the opposite, because it's horrid behavior coming from a character that is plain and simple, a bad person.

The problem with sort of stuff is when the work (say, a game, a movie or whatever) puts these "bad" things on a positive light (and usually that has to do more with incompetence on the writing more than outright intent to hurt people), instead of attaching it to an antagonistic character that's shown to be a bad example. Or botching the morals of a story.

Basic writing as I said.

Of course we can also tell a story where a character that starts as a disgusting individual but throughout the story learns and improves. Not a very "dark" example, but the original Ratchet & Clank is about two individuals that don't like each other and act a bit like dicks, but as they work together and get to know each other, they grow and improve.

That's the handy thing with storytelling, you can do many things as long as think responsibly. It's all in the context and the intentions.

But I guess if it's a bad guy and you're supposed to be hate it whatever he says then it's fine. I noticed that using strong curse words like "f*ck" or whatever is really associated more with fan translations and seems to be avoided in official translations unless it's a 16+ game

Oh boy, that's so true, at least with some old day translations. So many swear words thrown around, like in that one Final Fantasy IV fan translation. That one even had Star Trek references out of the blue! I believe that sort of thing was born from the "need" to fight back the usual censorship at the time.

I think today's fan translations are upheld to a much higher regard, though!

Edit:

As a matter of fact, I find what TigerTiger wrote about the stereotypes of women being weak relevant : the main characteristic of Neil is his cowardice, and yet he keeps calling his opponents to "chicks", implying they have, one way or another, what he believes are "feminine traits".

That's a usual key element with this sort of archetype of character, they either project quite a bit, or their hostility is there to shield themselves. Less often is pure madness (like Luca Blight mentioned above).

Weird... we talked about it this week end, and the person behind the "tr*nny gate" just posted on Twitter, just out of the blue, how much of a victim he had been in this case... served him right considering people are mostly supporting the translator without harassing the author of the post (that's tells a lot about them and feels good to read).

But that makes me wondering how delusional that person must be...

I think I'll take your advice and go for something like "kids". I don't want to take any chance despite most people being nice : it only takes one to start a sh*tstorm... and after all there are already part of the game where Neil calls the main character a "brat", so...

It was to be expected, I even thought about it before posting, it's The Internets after all.

That person getting some nasty comments would be no surprise, as I mentioned above, people are pretty happy and ready to throw around hate in all directions at first notice, unfortunately (thank you, social networks!), but I find hard to see that individual as a victim when it was the one instigating bad behavior in the first place.

Maybe should have done what those other people did and ask with relative politeness instead of what was done. I mean, they got the translator to agree to change it in good terms, and all it took was... Talking it out like decent people for a bit.

But you're better off leaving all that drama behind and not letting it poison you, that's how people end up being so hostile, it's a vicious cycle. Not worth it.

In any case as I said earlier, if you think you'll be more comfortable changing those words, as long as you find good substitutes I don't think people would care. Do what you think is best, it's your translation and it's not like the English language lacks in insults.

...And that just made me imagining a super British version of that Neil character calling others Plonkers, Muppets or Barmy (all these simply mean "stupid"). They have very funny words sometimes.

Almost done with the last remaining chapters... beta is coming soon but I'd like to run tests first. Maybe if some of you are interested, we can PM each other? I'd ask you to take screenshots everytime you see a problem, or the story seems incohesive, and you'd end up in the "readme" credits, like I always do? :)

Well, that's just a suggestion. You can as well wait a few weeks more till I complete the game, and release a "final" patch (but is it ever?)

Anyway, to continue on the "translation / localization" subject, I must say I enjoy nothing more than find a satisfactory solution to make the text look like it WAS written in English at first.

Like when "do not enter the tiger's cage" became "do not wake up a sleeping giant", about a big monster in Earth Seeker... or like I just translated names of cute little monsters named by a kid from "
Shin-chan, Bi-chan, Tou-chan, Aku-chan and Hi-chan" to "Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe and Toe"...

Was particularly happy about this one, even if it was done out of necessity (not enough room for text), so please forgive my pride.

Everybody have a nice day, I'm looking forward for some beta testers in a few weeks or so.

Cheers !

Good to see you keep going forward!

I'd love to help but I don't have a computer strong enough to run dolphin and not freeze the entire thing, and I don't know if testing on my Wii is an option.

Why not the real stuff? I mean it's a Riivolution patch, even if you can patch an ISO, it's meant to work on a real Wii as well. :)

If you're interested, I'll warn you when I'm finished. Lucky us the game has a veryyyyy handful feature of "replaying" your cutscenes and battles, so if anything is wrong we can play the record and take a picture.

Thank you for your message, let's keep in touch !

Just found out today that Orville was an unlockable character of "Smash Bros". I don't own a Switch and wasn't aware of that ! Guess I chose the right game to translate ! ;)

Since the introduction of trophies and stickers (or spirits on Ultimate) it has always been a joy to see references to games that were either obscure or never seen outside Japan. It's one aspect I always loved about the series, feels like a museum for Nintendo, and as time went on, video games in general.

Great news everyone, the translation is complete and entering “beta” phase !

I already contacted the people who offered to be beta testers, and provided them with a link so we can make some quality test before I release the 1.00 version.

Don’t worry, it shouldn’t be too long now, as I’m planning to play the game myself intensively!

While I’m leaving you on such a note, I want to give you a little something to wait.

I have an habit to make my “readme” with illustrations and graphical resources from the game I translate, and I’d like to say “Takt” has some of the most beautiful “wallpapers” I’ve ever seen.

So, here are some excerpts from the “readme” with the engravings of “Takt” I’ve used. Hope it will keep you waiting for a few more weeks!

That's very nice art indeed. As a Kid I read and re-read instruction booklets all the time, I loved seeing the official art the put in them. It seems to be a lot going on on the second picture, I'm sure most of it are references of stuff in the game.

For example the lower-left part of it tells me that there's probably a variety of staves in the game; I don't know if character specific or equipment for the player, but I guess I'll know soon enough!

It was fortunate that I finished recently the RPG I was playing so I can focus into this one. I can't believe yet it's being translated after all this time!

I look forward to playing this on wifi zwei.
Hello and thank you for your message.

Can you tell me a bit more about "wifi zwei" please? Last time you left a message I tried to see if it was similar to wimmfi and got a bit confused?

So far I can tell that the game does connect to the Internet when using a loader, while it doesn't with Riivolution (since Riivolution is only a modification of files in the disc, it tries to connect to servers that are down).

So I suppose there might be a chance to play online with an ISO, but so far I haven't have much luck!

Looking forward to reading from you.

Yes it is like wiimfi but it is completely open source and he has rewritten quite a bit of the altwfc code. http://zwei.moe/ Is the site though he hasnt redone the website yet.

So about playing online, I left a message on the Wimmfi forum after I tried to make a template and didn't know what to do from there.

I got a reply but to be honest I'm not sure I'm good enough with these things, so I'll give it a try for a while but beta testing remains my priority.

If we manage to play online later and a few typos were missed in the "Internet" part of the game, I'll release an update.

If any of you knows how to configure a new game for Wimmfi, please be my guest !

Beta testing is going well, and spells are getting numerous, so here's a glimpse of a board I will be putting into the "readme", in case you find it too hard to remember all combinations.

Looking forward to publishing V1.00, thank you all for your patience !

@Brand Newman

Can't wait to try the patch out - me and a friend had a laugh playing the multiplayer a month or so back.

Similar to lost magic it seems that you really need to invest the time unlocking spells etc... for it to really open up.
