Sony PlayStation 5 Showcase: September event - price and release date confirmed

Today is the day, or so we hope. Sony is airing their latest PlayStation Showcase event that, hopefully, finally, gives us the PlayStation 5 launch date and retail price. Considering that Microsoft already revealed both of those bits of information for their next-gen console, it can only be expected that Sony would do the same. Only time will tell if this is the event we've been waiting for. Catch the livestream, which kicks off at 1pm PDT/9pm BST, and lasts for 40 minutes, giving us "one more look" at what the PlayStation 5 will offer.

Live Coverage

The first game's footage is captured on PC emulating the PS5 experience. Square Enix.

It's a new Final Fantasy game. Action-based combat. A medieval-esque setting. Final Fantasy XVI. PlayStation console exclusive, will also launch on PC.

Now the rest of the games will be captured on actual PS5 hardware...

It's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. We get both cinematic and actual gameplay footage in this, where Miles faces off against new villains.

The Harry Potter RPG finally gets an official confirmation. Make your own story. Shape the future of the wizarding world. Hogwarts: Legacy, 2021.

Black Ops: Cold War gets some footage. This Friday, PS4 players get to try the multiplayer alpha for the game.

Resident Evil 8 coming 2021.

Arkane's Timeloop has a character-focused trailer that also gives us a better look at some of the gameplay elements, and how you'll be taking down the targets you're tasked with killing. Q2 2021. PlayStation and PC.

Devil May Cry 5 is getting a special edition on PS5. Available on launch.

Oddworld is next with Oddworld Soulstorm, featuring bigger worlds and more obstacles to overcome.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach revealed. Nothing more than that.

Demon's Souls begins the hype train anew. Actual gameplay is featured in this trailer. Load times between fog gates are incredibly fast, almost instant.

Fortnite is a launch title.

PlayStation Plus Collection. Available for PS+ users, offers Final Fantasy 15, Fallout 4, God of War, Uncharted 4, and many other PlayStation 4 titles, including Bloodborne, access these games through backwards compatibility on PS5.

November 12 PS5 launch in most countries, the 19th everywhere else.

I'd place money on this eventually getting delayed. It's just for hype. No footage? Nothing? Just a logo? No way this hits 2021 IMO

Prices seem fair. £359 for digital for the specs you get is insane value but no way I'm losing out on swapping discs with friends + resale values. I'll be getting the disc version for sure.

As for the conference, I'm a bit disappointed personally. There are zero must have games for me so far.

Yeah probably. I just was hoping for something to sell the system since nothing seemed interesting.
Here's hoping for Metroid 4 and GOW 2021!

Hmmmmmmmm.
Not enough.
I'm not convinced of getting either console at launch.

No clear straightforward statement regarding how backwards compatibility would work (bombadildo has a point).

Nothing really interesting at launch.

I will have to lock my wallet so that consumerism doesn't get the best of me, but I think I should wait until things are clear some months into the next gen.
TBF, I don't think Sony is dumb enough to lock BC away behind PS+, I'm 100% expecting this is just trying to be a competitor to Xbox Gamepass and not like..."Want BC? HAHA PS+ ONLY!"

Definitely expect an "Update" statement within the next day or two where they'll clarify that.

A shame that they ruined the balancing in Demon's Souls, every tutorial enemy dies in one hit, the first boss as a much more predictable moveset and can even be blocked.
The arena is also way too dark.
The character can also fast roll, they probably took DS3 as inspiration, horrible idea to retrofit that approach.
Flamelurker still has the generic design, but at least the game has nice particle effects, good job.
And if Final Fantasy 16 arrives unfinished like the previous game it will be nothing out of the ordinary, the battle system doesn't look as sluggish, maybe it's even well done this time.

Pretty good pricing on Sony's part. Surprised that the diskless version is a full $100 less but i guess anything less wouldn't sway many people to get an inferior version. I think the xbox will definitely sell more during the Christmas season than ps5 because of the S but lifetime sales may be different like the ps3.

To be honest, if anyone was trying to get into gaming, I would recommend the PS5 first but then the Series S as a second if they want something cheaper. PC gaming might actually be a tough choice for the next couple years tbh

I could potentially see them locking BC to the disc model only, and requiring PS+ on the digital edition to play PS4 titles, seems like a fairly Sony thing to do. "$100 extra now or pay it over the long term for the privilege of playing the games you've already bought."

In any case, the prices are reasonable, and Sony doesn't have much reason to undercut Microsoft early on, given how the dynamic between the two has unfolded this gen.

I was planning on the disk version but £359 for digital version is tempting even if it means missing out on cheap second hand disks.
The U.K. PlayStation Store can be rather expensive, so while £359 is a good price, think of how much the games will be.

You can always use other PS Stores, but would you actually want to have 4-5 different logins like some do to save money on digital games?

PlayStation should become like Xbox and use one login for all.

Actually it is cheaper than CAD (Canada).

I'll wait for Nintendo's 4k console to be confirmed before even thinking of buying one console.
Yeah, and next thing will be a Pro Controller with analog triggers.

4K Nintendo Switch... They haven't even reached 1080p.

From the prices I expect this console gen to be very similar to the last in terms of buyers on each console. The only thing I can see changing things is the 25/35$ Xbox payment plan with the included Knuckles, though this depends on how informed consumers will be. I don't see many people want to buy that if they're giving it as a gift, though I have literally no clue if xboxes are usually targeted towards the gift-receiving demographic, rather than the buy-it-themselves adults.

This will be the most interesting thing to watch come the releases this November. The exclusives situation between the consoles seems to be stuck at the same that it has almost always been.

Has GOW been delayed before?

I guess for the people that just plan to hack the consoles as fast as possible, would just get the disc-less ones and maybe keep the disc one as their main console in the future.

I mean, I could be wrong, but I feel like they did that because they didn't want to take up much time.
