New fiscal year results show that the Nintendo Switch has sold 55.77 million units worldwide

Nintendo has updated its sales figures with the information from the latest edition of its quarterly results, bringing Nintendo Switch hardware sales to a new milestone. In the published results, we can see that Nintendo's net sales were up 9% compared to last fiscal year, leading to a total of 1.308 billion yen (12.2 million USD). Both hardware and software sales exceeded the company's predictions, as Pokemon Sword and Shield and Animal Crossing: New Horizons broke records and performed incredibly well in terms of sales. Nintendo also cited COVID-19 as a reason for limited production of hardware in certain regions, though this apparently did not drastically affect the final two months of the fiscal year. Overall, Switch console sales were up 24% year over year, selling 21.03 million units, while software sales were up 42.3%, totalling 168.72 million.

The Nintendo 3DS saw a dramatic decrease in sales, reaching only 0.69 million units--a 73% decrease. On the other hand, digital subscription sales and digital download sales were up a massive 71.8%. As of March 2020, the Nintendo Switch has sold a lifetime amount of 55.77 million systems worldwide, surpassing both the GameCube and Nintendo 64, combined.

(1) Operating results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2020 For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2020, Nintendo Switch Lite launched in September as a compact, lightweight, and easy-to-carry dedicated handheld system, and Nintendo Switch performed very well without losing momentum, resulting in significant sales growth for the entire Nintendo Switch family. Looking at software, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield became big hits, posting sales of 17.37 million units, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, released in March, sold 11.77 million units, which is now the best start ever for a Nintendo Switch title. In addition to titles like Luigi’s Mansion 3 and Super Mario Maker 2 that were released during this fiscal year, sales also continued to grow steadily for popular titles released in previous fiscal years and for titles from other software publishers. The total number of million-seller titles during this fiscal year reached 27 titles, including those from other software publishers. Nintendo Switch also launched in China through Tencent Holdings Limited in December. Because of COVID-19, production and shipments of the Nintendo Switch console, accessories like the Joy-Con controllers, and Ring Fit Adventure faced delays in some regions from February through March, but this only had limited impact on business results for this fiscal year

Now they can develop another failed system without going bankrupt, nice. We need more Virtua Boy, Pokemon Mini and WiiU. I love Nintendo.

Who ever buys one of these 'failed' systems will have a good time. (whilst being sniped from all sides by people telling them they shouldn't be enjoying such a failure ☹️).

Wait a minute- when did i say the switch's homebrew userbase was smaller than the wii u's userbase?? I implied that it was small but not smaller than the wii u's. I said wii u was far more accessible but i never said the homebrew userbase on Wii u was bigger than it was on switch.
Saying it is incredibly small when you're arguing for the Wii U's side implies that you meant it is smaller. If you didn't mean to say that, then I apologise for not asking for the clarification. Either way, my point still stands based on what was implied.

With the Covid bump I honestly expected a bit more...Switch can't be found for less than $500 in a lot of places right now and there are still people buying at that price. Still some solid sales numbers, I'd say the floor for lifetime sales is now around 85 mil.

this potentially can outsell PS2 IF nintendo can make enough hardwares. They are having a good problem since the beginning. But 3 years after the launch, the price is still abnormally high, even more expensive than PS4 pro. crazy.

So ther in a healthy position - now concentrate on making a beast of a machine releasing by 2022 ps5 power and hire mor skilled game designers and make new ips adult content games preferred
Not very profitable for them. They ain't care about quality..they will more likely release a mediocre console but launch with with super Mario Odyssey 2, eveyeone will buy it to play Mario and the rest of games will be ports . .

Noone cared about loading times back then

False.

From people who came from using the Sega Genesis or the Super Nintendo, load times were a reason to not buy or rent the really expensive videogame console.

I was there back then and I can swear that long loading times really hurt Playstation sales at first.

Worse; when I say that early games were awful I really meant it, there was a Marvel Fighting game in 2D that had an almost a one minute load time.... for level!

Thankfully things did get better.

the dark tunnel that was the wii and wiiu

The Wii was not only one of Nintendo best selling consoles but it did have a lot of great games. I still play Wii games sometimes.

I was only taking about failing at generating revenue. Nintendo has extra money to spend on Research & Development with the Switch sales. And won´t go broke putting out a experimental console. But 10/10 for taking it out of context.

like the i said the porblem is on the wii besides the few gems it has most games are total crap, either becuase of bad controls or just bad in general, i would say the wii has a less worthy list of good games than the wiiu even if it has over 3 times of game released for it, you can find much bigger amount of quality games on wiiu and gamecube than wii, and on wiiu or gc the third party ports were decent or okay, but on wii they are all mostly crap with awful move controls that barely function among others, so yeah while the wii sold well its my least favorite nintendo home console ever made.

The same can be said about the Playstation and the playstation 2 .

Any popular videogame console that has enough sales will have a lot of crapware.

Check the trains. Some of them are playing a Nintendo Switch.
I would rather not check the trains anytime soon, because of Covid-19.

Also, I have been on trains plenty of times in recent years but never saw a Switch.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Well, I have seen people outdoors with a Switch, but seldom.
I have taken my Switch outdoors, but only a few times, TBH it is not so portable as the 3DS was.
I believe a Switch Mini probably would be better for taking it outdoors, but I haven't really used it so perhaps it is also annoyingly big.
I only remember seeing a 3DS outdoors once. It was indeed being played on a train. I think the Switch was already out by that time and it was also actually an original-style 3DS.

Wait actually, I might have seen a 3DS another time too. Again, on a train.
