Hello GBATemp!

After having GBATemp pop up in a lot of gaming related Google-searches for the past 10 years and reading through it quite a lot, today I finally made an account. A few months ago I bought a Wii U and I'm planning on softmodding it. I haven't fully started yet but would like to get into it well-informed and have some questions now about injecting Wii VC games.

A bit of background: Ever since Sony introduced the PS1, I did not buy any Nintendo consoles anymore whatsoever. I kinda' got the itch again to play some Nintendo-games during 7th gen, but I really don't like motion controls. I finally bought a Wii U a few months back, partly because of it's backwards compatibility with the Wii. Now I'm looking to hack it, mainly to play games like DKCR without any waggling and with a proper controller instead of a remote.

I'm thinking to go with CBHC, install my Wii U games to a HDD while I'm at it and would like to explore the possibility of injecting Wii VC titles. Previously I thought to hack vWii, but having only one HDD connected and leaving vWii untouched and not to have to open it everytime seems very convenient to me.

As said I'd like to play games like DKCR with a traditional recorder, which it doesn't natively support, so hence my following questions.
  1. Are Wii VC injected games compatible with the Wii U Pro Controller and/or the Wii Classic (Pro) Controller?

  2. Are Wii VC injected games compatible with Gecko-cheats? I believe I can embed the .gct-files in the .iso, right? I'm thinking to use cheats like these to enable Classic Controllers for games that don't natively support it and remap motion controls to a button, the wiggling to roll from DKCR for example. Or is there any other/better way to remap controls and enable any form of traditional controller (Wii U Pro controller or Wii Classic Controller)? Circumventing motion controls and Wiimotes is my goal here.

  3. Is local multiplayer supported?
I'm sorry for asking questions which might have well documented answers, I tried Googling around quite a bit and got some conflicting answers from different sources. I would have posted some links to info I did find, but I'm not allowed to yet as I'm still on ''noobie status'' over here!

Thank you in advance for looking into my topic! Have a good day!

Welcome to the forums!

1. I know the games can be compatible with the gamepad but not sure if they can be modded to support the wiiu pro controller. Looking at the injector does not make me any wiser.

2. Yes they are. You need that to enable classic controller support of DKCR, which then will work with the gamepad.
If you didn't already find it, here's the compatibility list for injecting Wii VC games on Wii U.

3. Local multiplayer is supported for injections. However, I have no experience with this when modding in gamepad support. I would believe so but I imagine the other player will have to use a wiimote or when using the hack possibly a wiimote with a classic controller attached.

On a slightly different note, progress has been made to make the Wii controlled completely with a gamecube controller. Here's to hoping this one day will be brought over to the vWii on Wii U!

Thanks! :-)

I've did quite done research but never saw anything indicating that it would. But then again; I also couldn't find answers to some rather basic questions.

If you didn't already find it,

Might be a stupid question; but do you know if enabling classic controller support will also make actual classic controllers function with the game? (If done so via embedding Gecko codes?)

Well, I've got to say, I vastly prefer a traditional controller over the gamepad. It's creative use in games like ZombiU and Scribblenauts Unlimited is great, but it's not a comfortable controller to hold.

On a slightly different note, [link cut hoping because to noobs aren't allowed to post 'em] one day will be brought over to the vWii on Wii U!

I didn't hear about this before, interesting, thank you for sharing! But I've got to admit; I'm not used to the GC controller at all, so I'd be fine sticking with the classsic/U pro controller!

I actually don't know since I haven't had the need to test but it would be interesting to find out.

The thing is, if I'm not mistaken the developer did say that he might add classic controller as an option so that makes things interesting. I don't like the gc controller that much either.

BTW I presume you are gonna use wiiu.hacks.guide for when you are softmodding it? It is the only one recommended here on gbatemp (except for maybe the ones you find here, but they aren't as up to date).

Wii U Pro controller will not work in vwii mode thus it will not work in vWii injects. Wii classic controller will work for Wii games that support classic controller. The rest of them you will have to use wiimote.
