Nintendo to have a revelation and realize they'd be a lot further along if they started acting like a gaming company. The Switch was great on paper. Not in practice.
So, erm... By which standards isn't the Switch great? Practice tends to say the sales are great, so I would imagine that's the defining factor. What am I missing?

The Switch is just a Wii U... and I wonder why the Wii U just flopped whilst the Switch is the best thing ever?
Wii U = Switch

The Switch is an ARM tablet of reasonable potency where the Wii U was a home console using an obscure and horribly underpowered architecture. How are they the same?
Also the Switch is far from the best thing ever, and while its no games might not be the same as the Wii U's no games it still has no games.

I want to see games get smaller. I’ve always been drawn to smaller experiences anyway, but so many games these days seem to go for quantity over quality, just adding in as many updates as they can to try and keep players locked into their microtransaction economy. In an ideal world, smaller games would mean smaller dev teams, which would mean smaller development costs and possibly less aggressive monetization from publishers (and maybe publishers being willing to take more risks), but that’s probably too much to ask for.

I have to agree with @DANTENDO here : what you're describing is about a textbook definition of 'indie studios', and it's not like they're an exotic breed at this point. For reference s, you might wanna start at the YouTube channel 'get indie gaming', but these days searching for anything indie easily gets you lists of the best of the least ten years.
(oh, and I do a yearly run of my best played games. It's overwhelmingly filled with what you're looking for)

When said cookie cutter sequels and/or microtransactions infest the sequels people want to see or once reliable workhorses, amusing puzzle games and monster budget titles that indy devs would struggle to match the spectacle of at present then I can see cause to complain.
I agree people probably ought to look and see what is out there as there is a fair bit, though not a lot gets terribly wide coverage which does make things a bit harder.

That said are there more platforms than ever? You have what PC, three home consoles, android and IOS? PC, three home consoles and two handhelds has been standard for quite a while at this point, and before that there was often even more selection. Granted I would rather there be only one console that everybody makes their own take on a la DVD players.

Hope that I’m sensible for a change and only buy the PlayStation 5, but know that I’ll end up buying the X1X as well.

Meh, I sense a smidge of Ninty hatred. Don’t bite :D
Personally I love the Switch. It took everything I liked about the Wii U and dialled it up to 11. It’s a great system, could it be better? Of course, everything can, but it’s a fairly capable system, especially for a portable and it’s got so many great games.

Sorry, I didn’t explain myself properly. You’re right, there are tons of indie games right now, and indies are almost exclusively what I play these days. What I was hoping for was more games with indie scopes but AAA production values.

Take God of War 2018, for example. It told a straightforward, intimate story without much mucking around, a decent number of side quests that tied in thematically with the story and stayed focused, and it kept its world relatively small but densely packed with content. It felt like an indie game in philosophy, but I don't think an indie studio could have created something that visually impressive or with that much voice acting.

There are, of course, games that still come out like that. Off the top of my head, God of War 2018, Spider-Man, Odyssey, Breath of the Wild and Fire Emblem: Three Houses all stand out. But those are all console exclusives, designed as system sellers. I'm sure there are some examples of third-parties like that (Japanese companies are really all that are coming to mind for me right now), but they seem to be a dying breed and that's the problem I was worried about.

Sakuri to get his head in the game and add a half-decent character to Smash. Mein Gott, that infuriates me so much. Also, a new, original, innovative Mario game that uses some mechanic no one saw coming.

Not sure what to expect moving forward.

I want more so-called VR games designed to be played with standard controllers (keyboard/mouse, gamepad, flight stick, steering wheel) and without having to stand up.

I think they'll go all out with their next console and eliminate confusion altogether by naming it; Xbox 4 Series One X Pro 720 Advanced Entertainment System.
