Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair announced

Playtonic Games have announced a new entry in the Yooka-Laylee series - a game that started life on Kickstarter back in 2015.

Unlike its predecessor, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is a 2D side-scrolling platformer that shares several similarities with the new Donkey Kong Country games including the music for the game again being composed by industry veterans David Wise and Grant Kirkhope.

Yooka and Laylee are back for a brand new adventure! Get ready for the ultimate challenge - the Impossible Lair! Capital B has created a Hivemind device and used it to enslave the toughest bees in the Royal Stingdom - the Royal Beettalion Guard!

Liberate them from chapters filled with only the tastiest 2D platforming trimmings, and take on a 3D overworld that contains a wealth of puzzles, secrets and some familiar faces!

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is releasing this year on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Playstation 4 and Steam.

Joy, another failed Bubsy experiment that won't go away!
The original yooka-laylee was absolutely terrible. No matter what game gets released on the news section here people always say that it looks amazing.

Looks really hot... this is unexpected in my opinion, but it's great that they get a second shot at making the universe happen. Looking forward!

Looks okay but nothing amazing. Seems like a step back in a way and the level design bugs me as it looks awfully blocky.
There's some slopes there but only one angle of them.
Is it really too much to ask for smooth varied terrain in a 2D platformer?
Am I just too old school for the basic blockiness of today, of which we had back in the early 8-bit days but its considered good now for some reason.
Heck water is straight and flat, how bout some waves or something, anything.
The whole game just looks lack luster to me and well it is clearly a budget title but just looks so cookie cutter bland.
Could compare it to Croc 1 and 2 on the Gameboy color in a lot of ways.
Okay not that stale but eh, they could do so much more to make it look nicer but eh, it does look fairly decent, it might be a better way to introduce the characters to new players and at a cheaper price so not bad I guess.
Still I think many could find a better 2D indie platformer without too much trouble, good lot of them out there now and well most with the same blocky design so not missing much there.

You know, I kinda wish it didn't use 3D models and was hand drawn to give it a unique art styel at least.
Maybe just do like Guilty Gear and limit animation frames with a fancy cel shading effect.
Guess we might get a "64-bit" effect as a secret that just color limits and mosaics everything so there's that I guess.

So a game that started as a Banjo Kazooie
clone is now a Donkey Kong Country Clone?

What are they gonna copy next, Super Mario Oddisey?

I never played Yooka-Laylee because the impression I get is that it was good but not great. An overambitious game which would have benefited from a greater focus of quality over quantity. Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie were better games which set a very, very high standard. There are a lot more games to compete with these days too.

Will this game manage to rival the Donkey Kong Country series? All five games are masterpieces, so once again, there's a very high standard to reach. Rare were Gods back in the SNES and N64 days; I really hope Playtonic Games nails it this time.
