Hello dear gbatemp community.

I have been browsing the forums for a while now and I see there are many interesting solutions to launching custom apps on the Wii U.
But I have some general questions, and I would appreciate it, if someone has some general directions for me.

I'm aware that the questions are definitely answered somewhere, at some point, but please bear with me and the fact that I'm too impatient to read through every single thread :(

  • I would like to create an all-in-one Nintendo System with my Wii U, with which I can launch Wii U Backups, Wii Games, as well as GC, N64 and maybe GBA
  • What storage system is recommendable? I would opt for an internal SD card, if possible, to store everything in one place. Thoughts?
  • What is the maximum capacity that the Wii U will support after "soft-modding" it?
    • I see there are models as big as 512GB for ridiculously low prices (R.i.P I can't post hyperlinks) -- how can this be, other than the cards being made in China?
    • Any recommendations for cheap and fast loading storage methods?
  • Will micro-SD + adapter work inside the usual SD Slot of the Wii U? I'm not sure I'd like the look of having an USB SD card reader attached to my Wii U
  • My go to solutions would be Haxchi in combination with Loadiine GX2 ?
  • Will I have any trouble with those methods while being on 5.5.3 E Firmware? I'm thinking the E stands for Europe?

  • I have the five original Wii U games that I would still like to be able to play online. Is that possible after dumping them onto the SD? I don't want to be using Discs no more.
    • Solved: Works after dumping my own discs with disc2app, and then installing them with WUD Installer GX2 to my NAND (console's Internal System Storage)

  • Are loading times better on internal SD Card, compared to Disc? I notice that my Smash Bros. Wii U is loading rather slowly from Disc.

That's about it, please have mercy on my soul and thank you very much for your patience and for reading :grog::psp:

okay im not expert buddy but here's my advice ..this was my set up i did mine just after xmas ... you will need a SD card 64 gig was mine ...and a 1 or 2 TB hard drive to store games also you should buy a DS game form the nintendo shop most people bought Brain Training as its cheap ...... after you hack the wii U and have installed Haxchi or CBHC " Coldboot Haxchi " .. Grab your games using either the Funkii U or USB Helper .. or elsewhere .. when you have your game you put it on your SD card and install to your HDD using a app called WUP Installer GX2 ...& yes you can have every NINTENDO System on 1 Console ..also a few little extras like PS1 PSP ( psp is a still early emulator on wii u ) .... & Some games work online some don't i,e Call of Dutys work ,, WII Sports Club ... i dont have any disks at all but all games ( I grabbed them all ) work fast no issues there at all

Nice. Thanks for your reply SuperDan! I'm on the verge of buying SD Card Reader for my PC and an adequate SD Card to apply the hack.

Anyone know whether the Wii Supports SDXC (eXtended Capacity form factor)? Or are only SDHC cards supported by the internal card reader?
I want to get as much storage for my buck as possible. And preferably I'd rather not hook up a bulky HDD, if you feel me.

About my original Smash Bros game. Any chance I can load that off SD or HDD and still play it online?
There is little use for me if I can't play those 2-3 games I launch most of the time on wifi :(

Thanks, I browsed a few posts, and saw other users confirming SDXC compatability, therefor I purchased one with 124 GB for 30€, which is still insanely cheap for so much capacity. Hope it will work out well.

Until then, let's see if someone can answer the last remaining issue with online play. I'm also really curious to see how much better games load off a SDXC, as opposed to DVD :shy:

You'll have to format it to FAT32, pretty sure (unless someone can correct me). the larger sd cards (like SDXC) default to exfat. Windows won't do it natively.

Use this to format your sd card when you get it, if you run into any troubles: http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm

Thank you very much, in fact I had already downloaded that tool only half an hour ago as a preparation :yay: I will make sure to format it correctly before use ^_^

Hey Hyena,

Hey guys, I would like to thank every one of you again, for the very warm welcome and pointing me in the right direction, instead of yelling RTFM or throwing rotten tomatoes after me :D

As of yesterday, I have successfully hacked my WiiU, thanks to the Kafluke's comprehensible guide (didn't he have a post in here too?).

I set up Haxchi, and followed up with an installation of CBHC and homebrew's channel forwarder. Although, I was unsure how to launch Homebrew Channel, after Haxchi's icon had turned to "Don't touch", so I just used the browser exploit one more time.
Could I have held or pressed some button on boot, to launch directly into Homebrew Channel after having CBHC installed? I didn't pay attention to the shortcuts that were mentioned. Homekey on boot for CBHC menu and hold A for loading straight into Homebrew?

Anyway, so far I have managed to dump my own discs with disc2app and install them on the NAND (only tested Mario Kart 8, and it works like a dream!).

I also found the revived USBHelper tool on reddit, and got a DLC and some retro games from it. Installed onto NAND with WUD Installer GX2, which also worked flawlessly :yaysp:

@eipok: Thank you for mentioning your thread! Believe it or not, but it was one of the first things I opened up after I signed up here. I definitely made use of some of the links provided in there. Your setup is pretty much exactly what I want to achieve on day. For now, I'm still a little overwhelmed when it comes to playing Gamecube or Wii games; I still have plenty of reading to do. I'm uncertain as to how to organize wii and or gamecube ISOs on a storage device to play them. When I tried to use USBHelper to get one of those games, it prompted me with an injection window where I had to provide an ISO (which I don't own currently). What exactly would have happened after the "injection" procedure? Would it have downloaded/created a pack that would be installable with WUD Installer?

N64 and anything below can just be emulated? I read that Loadiine can take care of such games too, but how? I haven't installed it yet; but where'd I store N64 roms for both Loadiine or Wii64 Rice?

Edit: I'm actually in the process of making the same mistake as this user: https://gbatemp.net/threads/wup-installer-gx-2-failed-to-install-a-wii-u-game-to-the-nand.488093/. I started to install a dumped Disc to my NAND; but this time I am out of storage (game is 13GB, I have 9GB left). So my question then: Is there there a file manager homebrew app with which I can delete the game content that is now being copied?

I haven't added a DNS server for blocking yet though. Will that also block my online play or am I good?

I just figured that Nintendo won't push any more updates for the Wii , don't you agree? But then I saw that 5.5.3 firmware has only been released a week ago :O :O

To make the CBHC be installed properly, you should have installed the Hombrew Launcher once you had the opportunity, before installing CHBC. Once CHBC is installed, and "Not touch me" is relatively hidden, then you have everything done. When the autoboot is launched, you just have to choose: Autoboot: System Menu and take Boot System Menu.

Regarding Wii and GC games, follow my instructions, and chose a way to do it: either use a differente hard drive for these games, that is my setup instead of using the injection.

Hack Virtual Wii
------------------------------

*You first use my SD which you can find in my post. (Trad
  1. Open the Wuphax from the HBL of the Wii U to hack the Mii Channel of the vWii. (Option A)
  2. Open Wii mode and open the Mii Channel to install the HBC.
  3. Open the Wuphax from the HBL of the Wii U to restore the Mii Channel of the vWii. (Option B)
  4. From vWii: Install d2x CIOS: V10 BETA 53 D2X ...
    1. 56 249
    2. 57 250
    3. 58 251
  5. From vWii: Install IOS 236 Installer v8 special edition: V10 BETA 53 D2X ...
    1. Installs a patched IOS36 into the IOS236 slot.
  6. From vWii: Open Yet Another Wad Manager, select that you do not want another IOS, and install::
    • USB Loader GX Forwarder (Canal).
    • Homebrew Channel "Wide".

Edit: I'm actually in the process of making the same mistake as this user: https://gbatemp.net/threads/wup-installer-gx-2-failed-to-install-a-wii-u-game-to-the-nand.488093/. Forget about that app, enter to the menu, and you should be able to cancel that copy.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Forget about that DNS stuff...Upgrade to 5.5.3 and install CHBC again. I did it on my own and it worked:

Just to confirm, I did it on my WiiU, and worked like a charm (I always like to have the most updated version, it is like a craze for me :P)

In summary, having the EUR WiiU on 5.5.2, with CBHC installed with the FW 99.99.99:
  • We don't need to "prepare" the WiiU, like uninstalling, nor deactivating anything as the CBHC nor Haxchi nor whatever.
  • Just let the upgrade download, then it will ask to reboot.
  • After the reboot, the upgrade will be installed.
  • After upgrading, we just go to the "do not touch", it will open the Haxchi, will reboot the WiiU in a "signed" mode.
  • After that, just go to the Homebrew Launcher, go to the CBHC Install Program and do it over again.
  • Reboot again.
  • Everything will keep working and the FW 99.99.99 maintained.
Thank you and hope you take advantage of it.

Best

Thanks for your assistance once more! I got as far as installing WUPhax, but I can't enter the vWii menu for now, because I lack a WiiMote. There is no way to bypass this and use the WiiU Gamepad or Pro Controller to bypass this, correct?

I fail to see the benfits that vWii offers right now. I mean, For GameCube games I could just inject and install them directly under WiiU, right? Does the same work for Wii games? I had a hacked Wii back in the days but I forgot most of everything. It probably easier to store all your Wii games on a HDD and then access them from vWii if that's the one benefit..
