The wiiu retroarch core mgba already emulates Super Game Boy perfectly.

mGBA does some SGB features perfectly, but is more like GBC emulation with SGB enhancement goodies than true SGB emulation. True SGB emulation is GB emulation under SNES emulation in order to have all the features of an actual SGB (pretty sick if you ask me). In 2018 BSNES/Higan is still the only emu which does SGB emulation properly. See how the SNESC does SGB emulation , far from perfect but I'm sure that the U can do it way better :)

Bsnes also has a helluva lot higher system requirements too, Wii U can't emulate Bsnes at full speed or even that well. Better off porting it to Switch.

In all honesty, and as a romhacker myself, bsnes is only good for debugging and hack making, nothing else.
You could even swap it for Snes9x Debugger, so really having bsnes in there is only for those accuracy hungry, but take into consideration that it is very resource heavy, not worth it agains standalone Snes9x for consoles imo.

Snes9x 1.54 on Wii U is the best Snes emulator, the fact it runs perfectly says a lot, and it's fairly accurate for what it is, second only to Higan. Like what was said before, Higan/Bsnes is far too much for the Wii U's CPU.

1) All good so far except the icons in Retroarch on the WiiU appear corrupt - looks like snow on an out of tune TV. Is this something I can fix?
2) Can I use samples for MAME (e.g. for sound in old games like Space Panic) in Retroarch? Any particular Mame version I should use?
3) Can I copy the ROMS to my USB hard drive where I installed RetroArch? I installed it using Wup Installer GX2

1) You need to download the Assets for the icons to display properly. You can download them from the Buildbot site or from the in-app downloader.
2) i think the newest core called Mame 2003 Plus addresses some of the issues with the sound samples for some arcade games (DK comes to mind) Try that one out.
3) Sure, you can use the roms from your HDD, simply copy them to the corresponding drive where your RetroArch files are and that should be it.

Thanks ShadowOne333! Will give those a try. For 3) I was under the impression that the hard drive was Wii U formatted and I couldn't connect it to PC. I may be wrong.

@SylverReZ, atleast wiimmfii went fine although people only use it for Mario kart Wii
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
At least if they ban you for cheating, get another Wii. They're cheap as chips.

Remember when RiiShop was a thing?
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
    not really
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
It got shutdown because somebody "accidentally" leaked the database for the amount of people using the beta.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
RiiShop is the laziest way of downloading Wii games. Did somebody not think of this through?
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
although i ended up accidentally changing my nand with no way of going back bc i didn't know you needed a gamecube controller to restore it (i have a wii minus/1.1, which doesn't have gamecube controller support)
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, I think you're talking about the recovery mode that the SaveMii used, and also was to restore softbricked systems.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
If your NAND was hardbricked, then just buy another Wii. Or go with the dirty NAND flasher method.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
and if i find the sd card i have my NAND backed up on, i can not only restore the NAND if i solder the right part in, but i can also put my NAND on dolphin, then i can play dolphin online, like PMEX Remix or MKWii Riibalanced
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    Brb
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, Oh yeah, that was a thing too. Dolphin does support Wiimmfi.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
yeah you just need to put your NAND backup with wiimmfi on it
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
ngl i feel like if a bunch of my friends have wiis and know how to get wiimmfi and back up their NAND, then we could do a PMEX Remix tournament
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
maybe even add UMVC3/DBFZ and make it a biathlon/triathlon
