Well No one found it yet.

Well CFW is still under in development, using TX Mod Chip is different than having a real CFW, it is more like having a Gateway Card, like the one for the 3DS, not a fully implemented CFW, there will be limitation to it probably. I assume SciresM has something for the exFAT support or a way to split file and rejoin them on the system.

You should tell them why. This is a special exception/situation that isn't the norm for other blooming hacking scenes.
Unlike the 3DS, where system version was not too much of a concern due to downgrading (until 11.0), the switch cannot be downgraded, period.

If any better (perhaps untethered?) solution is found for lower firmwares there will be no way to reverse your decision to update.
EmuNAND solutions are on the way for people wanting to play their games that require higher firmware, all they have to do is be patient.

I know being patient can be hard, but be sure to weigh your options before updating.
If you absolutely cannot wait, or are not bothered with the possibility of missing out on better hacks, then go ahead and update.
Otherwise you should stick to whatever sysNAND version you currently have, and wait there for an emuNAND solution.

You need the SD Card Update to Run Backups so even If you are on 3.0 and dont have the update. You lost.
Since Games are 7 GB + which dont Work in FAT32

Can you explain this with more detail? With my firmware 3.0.2 i cannot use a card big enough to backup my nand for example?

As for the OP, from everything i learned here you should not update only if you want to wait for softmod, which is coming a little after Atmosphere launch.

But if you dont mind using the RCM jig or is using Xecuter OS then you should update since it wont make any difference.

Someone please correct me if im wrong tough.

Okay, but this is all revolving around a single entrypoint whereas other consoles typically lost all sources and entrypoints into CFW and homebrew when updated. The ONLY reason to stay low on a Switch is for a software method which to some people would not matter. If you're going to tell someone to stay low, tell them why, that way they have the option. It isn't as important on the Switch as it is on other consoles.

For goodness sake there's a freaking sticky on this exact topic.

https://gbatemp.net/threads/firmware-status.495078/

For the SUPER lazy:
  • 1.0.0 is the best firmware. If you're on 1.0.0, stay on 1.0.0. It will have a non-coldboot solution to launch CFW.
  • 2.0.0 - 3.0.0 are next-best, and are interchangeable. If you're on 2.0.0-2.3.0, feel free to update to 3.0.0 to use the Homebrew Launcher. It will be able to launch CFW without a hardmod.
  • 3.0.1 - 4.1.0 are interchangeable, and also good. If you're on them, *stay* on them. They are "safe" for custom firmware, but you currently cannot use the Homebrew Launcher with them. It will need a hardmod to launch CFW, but will eventually see a hardmod-less solution.
  • >=5.0.0 presents "inconveniences" with homebrew/cfw implementation. It's still advised to NOT UPDATE. A hardmod will be required to launch CFW.

This is outdated. It's only loosely true at this point. the "inconveniences" and hardmod need to be clarified as it's NOT as extreme as people are making out to be.

No, this is still exactly true. A hardmod is a hardmod, which some people may see as an inconvenience to have to use. 1.0 won't require a hardmod at all and the others (higher than 1.0 and lower than 5.0) will see softmod. Upgrading to 5.0 at this point in time will require a hardmod for an undetermined amount of time. We know for fact 4.1 and lower will receive softmod within the next year.

Not to mention that we don't know if the SX NAND modification is detectable by Nintendo to cause a ban. Still best practice not to modify your system NAND at all.

Sorry, that was meant for someone else, not you. I erased it from my previous comment earlier.

No, it's not "exactly true". Yes, a hardmod is a hardmod, but when people envision hardmod, they're thinking about opening up consoles, soldering, chips, shit like. No one thought that the hardmod would be something as simple as shoving a wire into a slot on the outside of the Switch. This shit needs to be clarified so people can make an informed and educated guess. What you and multiple other people are doing is spreading incomplete information.

I understand that anything higher than 4.1.0 will require the jig or modification, but not everyone else will know that this DOES NOT mean they'll lose access to CFW. All I'm saying is that you need to clarify and make sure that people understand that.

Well the 3DS hard mod was just soldering some wires, just that the person who doing the modding needs to be good at soldering and understands electronics.

Still another question. IF I update to latest Ninty fw from 3.0 and download my long awaited champions ballad to BOTW is my only option to homebrew using the jig for now? IF I stay on 3.0, what are my chances on downloading the DLC using some kind of EMUNAND in the future?

Ok so here is a question.

With the current methods of having to do the mod with say the Xecuter in the USB C and the jig... How long does that take?

From taking your cold off Switch out from the case, popping the USB-C in it, popping the jig in. How does does it take before you are ready to rock and roll??

If its anything like the gateway where you have to do it a few times to get it to work, its annoying.

Anyone know?

I can agree with you on those points about a hardmod and how it can me misconstrued. But everyone blatantly stating updating is okay without stating the pro's and con's to each firmware as they stand now also shouldn't be happening. Like, cool, Xecuter has RCM working on all firmware's on coldboot with dongle, but no one knows if that translates to easily bannable behavior from online because it's just too soon to know how modifying system NAND will turn out.

At the end of the day, most people on this site know what they are getting into already, but users that can't help themselves to information already available to them from sticky posts and the last 100 posts in this sub may already be past helping. And that includes knowing what the Switch hardmod method is.

I can always update later if I want or need to
