Binding of Isaac prequel game The Legend of Bum-bo gets first gameplay trailer

Back in March 2016, the creator of the hit indie game The Binding of Isaac showed off a new game he was working on, describing it as a turn-based puzzle RPG. Titled The Legend of Bum-bo, it was set to be the prequel story to The Binding of Isaac, and would release early 2018. In January, it was announced that the game would be delayed to somewhere around the second half of the year, and nothing more was heard about its development. Now, the development team has revealed a new trailer for it, giving fans a first look at what the gameplay will be like. Focusing on randomly generated areas, you'll need to face off against enemies and fight them by matching items in your inventory in order to attack. The game is supposedly almost finished with development, and will launch later this year for iOS, Android, and PC. A Nintendo Switch version is also planned, and is scheduled for sometime in 2019.

The Legend of Bum-bo is a randomly generated, turn based puzzle rpg where you take the role of Bum-bo (from the binding of Isaac) as he punches the faces off hordes of paper goons and takes their coins! …only to gamble them away at the casinos.

Utilizing his bag of trash bum-bo forms pagan glyph’s (via a match 4 puzzle system) that create offensive and defensive attacks and gain specific types of mana to cast epic spells that range from jagging stuff with a fish hook to summoning mom’s leg to crush all who stand in your path.

Every dungeon bum-bo enters will be randomly generated and much like isaac feature hoards of monsters, bosses, traps, puzzles and randomly chosen spells, so each run will be totally unique and each successful play through will unlock more items, trinkets, playable characters and more.

so basicaly a candy crush type of game with combat cutscene everytime you match stuff, i will pass.
You need to look at it as a turn-based RPG first and foremost, not a match 3 game. Combat in turn-based RPGs is always time-consuming and tedious, but it is the strategy in choosing the right moves to make that keep them interesting.

This just utilizes a puzzle grid as part of the move selection, which randomizes the strategy a bit. But it can also (presumably) reward you for strategic plays that chain combos, just like other match 3 games. It looks like the things you match on the board get stored as resources, which gives you the ability to use skills and whatnot so you are not always beholden to the fate of the board state.

From a design perspective, it sounds totally plausible to me. I will have to try it and see if it's actually fun, though. Since it is randomly generated, there needs to be some driving factor that motivates you to play and makes you feel like progression is meaningful. Given how masterfully the Binding of Isaac managed to do this, the developer's reputation leads me to believe that it will be a solid game at the very least.

That is the most contrived and awful looking combat I have ever seen in a game.

The initial cutscene had me interested, but good golly did I do a 180 when I saw that awful combat system.

its still candy crush gameplay... you can put more technicall stuff but the entire gameplay is matching 3/4 of the same and that gets you a cutscene to attack, wich is preety bad, i wouldnt even call it an turn based rpg but more of a matching game with cutscnes, whatever they were trying its preety cringe and i doubt binding of isaac and the end is night will probably stay very far away from this as possible, his games were about precise handling and quick movement and this one just seems extremely boring, just putting a cutscene for every mtahcing to attack will make battles even drag more than normal rpgs specialy random battles.

Oh yee of little informations

This is not some candy crush clone and the fact you use Candy Crush as a reference to this playstyle is annoying

This game actually plays more Like Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords

puzzle-quest-challenge-of-the-warlords-810x456.jpg

Which by the way was amazing popular and will fit well with the handheld smartphone route

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puzzle_Quest:_Challenge_of_the_Warlords

So yeah comparing a clone of widely popular game from 2007 vs saga from 2012 is kinda a point if your gonna base it off appearances.
