the DS Phat

Heres Why
1. L/R Buttons that dont break
2. It plays GBA games
2.5. GBA games dont stick out
3. Comfort
4. Hinges (compared to ds lite)

what do you think the best ds is and why?
I like the DSi XL because all the cool built in apps, and the fact it's a bigger screen. (Also, the use of different wifi securities was cool too)

You mean, for ds games? The Dsi xl!
I have a gameboy advance to play those handheld classics. Gba on Gba and ds on ds. My favorite things about the Dsi xl is, it's great sized screen and longer stylus. It's comfortable for larger hands. I also really like the way the Dsi xl toggles the brightness (in-game).

The original DS has bad screens, sharp edges that cut into your hand. D-Pad is better than on Lite. I was so glad to sell it and buy a DS Lite. I played through it, till it fell apart lol, but had a long fun time with it. Now I use a AGS-101 GBA SP for GBA and a DSI XL for DS, both systems are better on original hardware than on 3DS. Still wish there could be a great GBA emulator for DS (without frameskip), but on the other side I don't like the useless second screen weight for GBA games... So maybe soon there will be GBA XL mods... ^^

theres a really good gba emulator for the DSTWO flashcart if you dont have a DSTWO then there is still another decent emulator https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbarunner2.451970/page-26#post-7293336

I know them all, I am an enthusiast. I need it perfect.
edit: and absolutely glad to use the GBA SP 101. don't even need a regular GBA modded. SP is good.
Bought a Xeno GC Modchip to try out this new alternative GB Player software, but did not find the time to solder it in just for this use... ^^

Don't think it will ever be in unofficial form on the recent handheld systems.
not on DS, not on 3DS and not on Vita. i tested them all, Metroid sound is annoying. Vita is the closest to be playable for me...
I mean, if you want a crap ton of GBA games at your fingertips, you could always get an everdrive or ez flash

the injected method is ok, if you don't have a GBA+Flashlinker. Retroarch cores maybe are variable by game. The two Metroid games are not ideal. For me the formfaktor of the 3DS's are too much material ^^
I thought about having a raspberry Pi with a 4:3 screen in a Handheld case, but it won't reach the well designed handiness of Nintendo and Sony handhelds...

Ds Lite
Played GBA games without having the carts sticking out of the bottom, felt great in my hands, and had pictochat. I like the feel of the Ds Lite much more than the Dsi XL.

Only ever had a ds lite, so I can't really compare to the other models. Had a m3 real perfect bundle as my first flashcart and it could play gba roms perfectly since it had the ram expansion. Upgraded to a dstwo later for better snes emulation, but its gba emulators were never as good as playing on my m3.

I really love both the OG DS and the DS Lite. The latter for the screens, and its just a nice sleek design. Having an EZ 3 in 1 that sits flush on the Lite is a bonus. The sound on the OG DS seems better, not really tested, just has more space to it. I collect both and enjoy having them. I recently found a PokePark 2005 for $25.00 the other day, and a Metallic Rose Lite for $10.00. Fun times.

I would say a mix of the original DS and the DSI, original DS for everything external, and DSI for everything internal.

from experience the DS has better buttons, comfort and speakers (they sound a bit louder, higher quality, and bassier than the ds lite and newer revisions) and GBA compatability

and the DSI for the screen, extra bit of hardware and extra internal functionality

EDIT: would be absolutely amazing if there was a mod for the OG DS to install a dsi or ds lite screen

ds lite was the one that had the carts sticking out, the original was the one that didn't

@AncientBoi, Yeah, believe you can do PSP games as well. But a Pi5 is much powerful in comparison.

Not sure about other models of Pi4 but the Pi 4 B with 8GBs OCed to 2Ghz handles PSP really great except like 1 game I found and it is playable it just looks bad lol Motor Storm Arctic something or other.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Other games I can have turned up to like 2X and all kinds of enhancements, Motorstorm hmmm nope 1X and no enhancements lol

I will admit that one does seem more interesting than the usual Ambernic ones, and I already liked those.

This looks like one of their premium models, so... $150 :glare:

  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    To me that seems reasonable.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I mean since basically all the games are errmmm free lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean yeah sure but the specs are the same as a $50 model, it's just those pesky "quality of life" things driving up the price, like an actually working speaker, or buttons that don't melt, and stuff like that.

I think all in my Pi 4 was well north of 200 bucks 150ish for the Pi 4 the case the fancy cooler, then like 70 for the 500GB MicroSD then like 70 for the Xbox controller. But honestly it's a nice set up I really enjoy and to me was worth every penny. (even bought more controllers for 2 or 4 player games.) hmmm have never played any 2 player games yet :(
  • Veho @ Veho:
Yeah that's what I hate about the RPi, it's supposedly $30 or something but it takes an additional $200 of accessories to actually turn it into a working something.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
yes that's the expensive part lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean sure it's flexible and stuff but so is uremum but it's fiddly.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah a lot of it I consider a hobby, using Batocera I am constantly adjusting the collection adding and removing stuff, scraping the artwork. Haven't even started on some music for the theme... Also way down the road I am considering attempting to do a WiiFlow knock off lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I want everything served on a plate plz ktnx, "work" is too much work for me.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Hmm, with that in mind, maybe a complete out-the-box solution with all the games collected, pacthed and optimized for me would be worth $150

Yeah it's all choice and that's a good thing :)
