Well I've got Dual Destinies so that's one thing sorted for me. :D
Also, maybe a bit of another dumb question, but since this is planned to be an episodic release will the game go back to Japanese starting with the second case after you (As in the player) finish case 1 or will it just not continue any further until the player is able to have the following case installed as well?
If you continue to Episode 2, it will be in Japanese, because we won't include any half-finished files in the release. We don't actively prevent you to continue to untranslated parts.

So will there be seperate files to be downloaded onto the sd card for HANS. Because i've heard of this thing called braindump to be used with HANS, will this be required?
There will be detailed instructions in the release notes.

WARNING 3DS HAS A NEW UPDATE FOR 11.4 FIRMWARE DONT UPDAT IF YOUR ON 11.3 AND WILL USE HANS!!!!!!!!!!
I just did without thinking...
Don't ever update without confirming homebrew still works if you're not on A9LH. Only on A9LH you can update without thinking...

I would like to recommend making the usual english name but making them sound japonese afterwards. It's what we are planning to do in a possible Brazilian Portuguese translation. A lot of people think they could get away with any problems by saying Wright has japonese decent. And that might just work...
Overall thought, would truthfully say to move slowly with this. It's not impossible we get these games officially, and while a patch may prove there's an interest, doing too much would demotivate the official team in doing so.
We've released a Demo and Episode one is finished (there's only technical problems, the translation is done), so we won't change anything at this point. Even before we've made it clear that there won't be any localization of names and places. Anyone who has played DGS knows this does not work and would be utterly ridiculous. You can rationalize this in you mind however you want, but we won't re-write any part of the story to make the Japanifornica idea work - especially since there'll be a sequel soon.

DGS was released almost 2 years ago and CAPCOM has been very clear that it won't be getting an official localization - the claim that our release would hinder that is unfounded. We will not slow down, Episode 1 will be released as soon as we've solved the issues.

Among the options, one of our favorites was to romanize the names to japonese and then transliterate them back.
For example, our version of Wright, Veríssimo, would be Berishimu (ベリシム) in this situation. You get the results by changing "si" and "ci" to "shi", "v" to "b", "l" to "r", etc.

Here's a list of Hiragana characters for reference:

[cut the ridiculously huge table]

Edit: Please, no sufixes like -kun, -chan or -sama. They are a language tool exclusive to japonese, and not adapting them can make your translation seem unprofessional (as well as alienating the majority of the audience for it).
Again. We've established the style in which our translation will be done and that won't be changed at this point. We've heard many suggestions from making even the obviously Japanese characters Americans, calling Wright Raito to even giving them new Japanese names that would be a pun in English. All of these were considered, but we decided to leave names and places as they are. There are only two confirmed characters who are ancestors of previously established characters - DGS is a spin off like Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright. There is no pressing need to stick to the "Japanifornica" pattern like there was in AAI2.

You can handle your translation however you think works best - we've established ours and we won't change it at this point.

I'd appreciate if you'd link me that.

I've noticed from your previous suggestions that you didn't bother to read the thread. It's been discussed to death. Just google "eshiro dgs west" and you'll get your answer.

Well, you feel we lack imagination, I think you're disrespecting the source material and make it ridiculous. I won't try to change your mind, but at the same time, we won't change ours. We made up our mind a long time ago and people like you pop up occasionally to inform us that we're wrong and stupid. Noted and ignored.

And please stop posting huge images - they clutter up the thread...

Dude, I said just kidding. You're taking things WAY too seriously :P

That's not really a "NO!" in my book ;)

It's just that, with a sequel coming out, the chances are pretty high. Would be bad if you all just ended up wasting your time or unintentionally cause the cancellation of an oficial version. That would be disastrous, actually.

I'm just growing tired of people popping in late in the game and telling us we're doing it all wrong - as if their idea was new and fresh and we didn't give this any thought at all.

That's nice, you probably haven't talked to many Japanese people then. It is in my book.

No, chances are not high at all. If you bother to read this thread you can find a list of reasons why a western release won't happen - some are covered in this video:

Thanks for your concern about us wasting our time, though.

Part of me argues that we didn't start getting any of the games outside of Japan until after the trilogy had wrapped up But I've been gradually losing confidence in it actually happening.

Please don't listen to people being negative or telling you what you're doing is a waste of time. You're doing an amazing thing, lots of people are eagerly anticipating this. Thank you for your efforts so far.

Now, now.
Listening to criticism is the very foundation of a good work. Ignoring it means ignoring your problems. Ignoring your problems mean there's no improvement. If you want to do anything, you have to be prepared and willing to receive any complaints. That's my motto.

@Uwabami As for what I said, it was never my intention to trash talk the people behind the project. I was hoping to have a friendly conversation, tough it seems my intentions got misinterpreted. I apologize if I came of as rude. I'm trusting you to do the right decisions. That's what I meant by "you do you".

Oh, we listen to critism, but you're very late. We already had this discussion you tried to start again several times and people have been trying to bully us into changing our minds a lot - it did decrease since we released the demo, though. This particular topic is just moot now. We discussed it, made a decission and started working on it. Your suggestion is way too late to be even considered - and again: it's not new.

Good to know that was not your intention, but it sure sounded like trash talking from my end. We can always talk about most aspects of the game, but I'm kinda tired of explaining again and again why we're not americanizing names and places. We've been through this many times, I seriously doubt there's anything new to add to the debate. It was the reason of flamewars and harassments against our team, so hopefully you understand that I'm over this topic.

I was also thinkinking about how just because Cpcom have said they want to bring this game to the West doesn't necessarily mean they will.

I personally hate vagueness but ok I'll drop it @Uwabami
What exactly is vague about this?:
I don't know how you could interpret that as a "no". I said I can't speak for every team member and I haven't really taken a poll for it - so I can't tell you for sure if everyone is on board. I'm sure at least some are - I for one look forward to digging into the files of DGS2 and I'll order it as soon as it's listed on play asia. And yes, I'm sure most of our tools should work with DGS2 as well - we'll see.

Well, @Uwabami using the word "bullying" is a more apt choice of words than whatever I'd pick up.

So someone just came and suggested some "lolcalisation" change not motivated by trying to convey meanings behind those names to non-japanese speakers but mucking up the name just for the hell of it. Not without professing how repulsed he is with Japanese specific stuff staying in the translation and "unprofessional and alienating to the majority of your audience".

Then after this suggestion isn't taken into account (perhaps because it's by people doing it for fun and not owing any "audience" of concern trolls anything), he suggests the fan-translation for this game and the successor must be dropped. THEN that this is criticism and it somehow justifies all of the above.

It's not hard to see how Capcom didn't localise this game. People like this would be among the first to take part in online mobs to get it cancelled or censored over various details they're not comfortable with.

It may just be me but even if it was a joke saying something like "Talk about a lack of imagination" comes off as a little bit condescending for whatever reason.

I was joking. I apologized. I'll do it again if I need to. I meant no ill against you people. Sorry.

@GHANMI Well, considering how the series has handled names so far, when people ask to have names done in a similar fashion, it is implied they want the names to be changed for those reasons. Explaining why to an Ace Attorney fan would be quite redundant.

EDIT: Also, calling it bullying is a pretty big stretch, wouldn't you say?

What I meant were screenshots of the custom speech bubbles like HANG ON! or Barok van Zieks' OBJECTION! similar to the ones in the translated demo. Or a screenshot of the cross examination intro (if the text was changed to english).
Not sure what that will do, and it will take away much of the impact once we release if we show everything in advance...

Again: DGS is a spin-off and much more serious than the main series. NO established character appears, it's only (in some cases heavily) implied that some are ancestors of established characters. Yes, some names are still puns, but they're also references to Sherlock Holmes novels. They made it somehow work that names from the Holmes canon worked as puns, which we cannot hope to replicate without removing the Holmes references - that's why we opted to leave the names as-is and instead explain the puns in the release notes. They aren't even that good tbh.

EDIT: Also, calling it bullying is a pretty big stretch, wouldn't you say?
I wasn't talking about you when I said bullying. I was making the point that you're not the first one to try to convince us of his preferences, and some of those people went way too far.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
