I'm looking for one, I know I can just burn DVDs but I don't really like messig with physical media all that much. Is there anything like the Dreamcast's Phoebe for the PS2, or are there any clones that actually run PS2 games? thanks.

If your goal is to try to play PS2 ISOs on a PS2, then i would just install MCBOOT. Its an awesome program that lets you use cheats and play out of region games and install ISOs to a flash drive. Its "Easy" to do too. All you need is a specific PS2 game (I used 007 Nightfire), a few progrms, two blank DVD's that are writable, and a screw driver

PSX2 is great and all but I do like the idea of playing PS2 games on a PS2
However, the process of soft modding a PS2 can be tricky. When you get the exploitable game, you have to burn the ISO to the computer and modify the Eboot file twice and rip the ISO onto two separate CDs. Once that's done, you have to open up your PS2 so that the game will run without a lid. You then have to swap the disks twice in order to get to software that will install directly onto the memory card of your PS2. from there, you will be able to access the contents of a flash drive and install a program which will play ISOs.....
It might seem complicated, but i had fun modding my PS2. There are several really good tutorials on the PSX forums on how to do this process as well as good YouTube videos

You don't need to do any of that with MCBOOT. With the version I have, my PS2 automatically boots into a clone of the home screen with the option to load PS2 ISOs from my hard drive. Then you just need to pick a game and it runs straight away; it's as easy as that. To install games to your drive from disk, all you need to do is put the disk in your PS2, then tell it to rip the ISO and it'll show up in your games list. The most "messing about" you'll ever need to do is when installing ISOs from your computer to your hard drive, in which case you'll need to use a program called Winhiip to install them correctly. The method described above reminds me of a very old method of modding a PS2 which was out of date at the time I wanted to hack my PS2 (2015-ish, maybe?). Like with most consoles that old, the hacking process has been made incredibly simple and easy by now.
You are able to hack both fat and slim but they way you do it is different. The main goal of all that gibberish I said earlier was to install Free MCBoot on a memory card. And there are four ways to get it.
1.) do all that stuff I said earlier.
2.) if you have a friend with Free MCBoot on a memory card, you can transfer the data onto yours no problem
3.) you can buy a disk swap tool (which is expensive)
4.) buy a memory card that has Free MCBoot on it. I've seen a few of those floating around.
If you can find the right game and if you have flashdrive/ hard drives and CDs to spare, the entire process will only cost you about $10 USD and 2-4 hours of your time

Ah, maybe that's why I didn't need to deal with what you described; I already had a swapdisk so I used that to install MCBoot.
EDIT: After a quick google, it seems like some claim you can burn the Swap Magic disc ISO to a DVD and use that. All you'd need at that point is the little plastic tool to open your PS2 disc drive while it's still running, which should be fairly cheap. That might just be for the fat PS2, though.

That is what i had to do and if i recall correctly, (I could be wrong) this method works on both fat and slim.
I didn't need a tool to open my PS2. All i used was a screwdriver

Really? But the fat models don't have lids to the disc drives; the slims do. Looking at my fat PS2, I think it would be much easier to use the swap tool, as the drive doesn't look to be easily accessible without a fair bit of disassembly, and even then, it might not be possible to hard-mod it to open without pressing the eject button. Unless I'm missing something?
You're right there is no lid.... or a top either XD
When soft modding a fat PS2 like the method i mentioned above, the entire top of the PS2 has to be off so that the disk can be manually pulled out of the PS2 to swap disks.
Well getting them off eBay is cheaper than a magic swap but if you don't want to wait a week+ on shipping, getting the right game and disk swapping is just as cheap and faster
But it's all up to preference. I didn't want to wait on shipping so I did it myself.
It was nothing big, but I did have to be careful to not break the very thin ribbon cable. But the entire process went without a hitch and it's really easy to do to! But I guess getting a FMCB memory card of eBay would actually have been a lot easier XD

Well i did try, i have a gameshark and i followed the instructions. The part where it says copy the file you made with the tools to the Memory card, by putting it on a USB flash drive. I did. It was supposed to overwrite the "your configuration" file on the Memory card with the one on flash drive except it doesn't, they both get stuck on the system. That is the problem i keep having.

If you still have interest in soft modding your PS2, you should get a memory card
Or if you feel like doing something hands on, you should try disk swapping. I had a lot of fun doing it.
I'm confused.
What i want is to take a PS2-9000 (which has no hard drive bay) and set it up so that when I turn it on, I can quickly launch a game selection screen in a single step and I can pick the game I want without swapping out any disks ever (or at lest after the initial setup) - sort of like how my Wii is set up. Is that possible?
