You can install games directly to your console or USB, and launch them as if they were bought from eShop.
there are few differences and features you will lose, like the ability to mod a game easily (using the updates folder on SD) or shared savegame, easy savegame backup etc.
The most problematic issue is the games from another region which requires file edition. it was easy to do on SD card. It will he harder now to edit the files directly from the console's system memory, so most users are playing games from the same region than their console.

On the contrary, you will get new possibilities : You can play online !

It became the most commonly used method to play games on WiiU. it's easy and safe.
There's a guide to install game to the console, but I find it a little outdated now that it's possible to use Custom Firmware. I might rewrite it.
There are guide for CFW, I haven't read them yet to suggest one. I usually don't like them, and wish I had time to write one too.

PS: thread moved to backup loading section (why post this in homebrew section?)

You can directly install games with WUP installer.
isnt wup installer for 5.4.0 and lower?

Wup Installer works on 5.5.1, (5.5.1 is the golden firmware, update if you haven't already)
And yes, wup installed games can be played online.

You don't even need a custom firmware !

Most users think they have to, because it's possible, but you can actually install and play games with a clean and official console.
The custom firmware is actually a way to enable installation/launch of games not available on Disc format (for example the eShop-only titles, or to install DLC you didn't pay for). These two elements require a custom firmware because they are tied to a specific consoleID, the CFW patch this requirement to allow any titles to be installed/launched.

But you can install games and updates on a clean WiiU v5.5.1.

What I recommend :
1. don't install CFW yet.
2. try installing games from your region and see how it works, play, be happy, etc.
3. if you want to play games which require custom firmware, there are different method to do that. a temporary one (Mocha), a persistent one (Haxchi) and a one launched at console boot (Coldboot Haxchi).
I recommend reading the stickied thread on this section "ultimate WiiU hacking guide" and "what is haxchi and cbhc" before wanting a custom firmware. It doesn't cover Mocha yet.

you can launch the temporary CFW manually before launching a game if you prefer keeping your console clean.
you can install CBHC if you want to always be in CFW mode and don't worry about launching it before playing specific games (not all will require it).

no, but you can install games to USB.
You need a dedicated USB hard drive for the wiiU as it will be formated entirely for WiiU games. no partition possible, so be sure you can format it and backup'd everything before doing it.

Does loadiine support USB loading yet?
Not yet.
It would require Cafiine's source update.
Loadiine is actually based on Cafiine, it's rewriting file access path in memory (easy to do), replacing "internal/nand/blabla" with "External/sd/wiiu/games/" and using the console's file system manager access it. (the WiiU file system can access FAT32 SD card, but can't access FAT32 USB).

Adding USB support is harder (but doable), as it's not a simple string rewrite anymore, it actually needs a function to manage a file system and call files individually for each requested files from the memory. it could be slower.
Nobody is working on that, all developers are busy in their different, respective and existing projects.

Nope it doesn't. USB or System memory only.

No and it will probably not happen.

Thanks for replies, wish I didn't have to have a dedicated hdd for wii u games since I already use mine for GC and Wii backup which are more important to me and my system memory is almost full!

You can do it the other way around, run Wii and GC games off a SD card and use the USB for Wii U games. Wii U games are pretty big so it makes sense to do it this way if you don't have a ton of Wii/GC games that you play regularly.

Thanks for the suggestion but before I went to college I backed up my entire Wii and GC collection so that I wouldn't have to bring my Wii lol

Well I still don't know such much about all the new stuff,
but I think you need to use "WupInstaller y Mod" to install games in usb.

Yes, you can install in usb hard drive.

However wait for a proper response from the experts.
