Does it matter? Is there any performance difference? I'm leaning toward thumb drive so I don't have to worry about power cables or Y-cables.....

I've got a 128 GB pendrive in me Wii U.
Never liked having a ugly external HDD next to me consoles.
I was thinking of getting one too but god Im happy I didnt.
They tend to get hot which I wouldnt want in my WiiU and its only 128 (well...around 100ish gb actually) for the same price as lets say 1tb hdd.... and 128gb thats not even enough to store GC games :)
And I dont think WD Elements for example looks ugly...I dont even notice it lol

If I got the means to utilize the internal HDD, I will do so.
I'd make an exception for pendrives tho.

I used to have a 128gb Kingston pendrive attached, but it die itself one day, I lost al my saves, worst experience ever, also it had compatibility problems with some games (Child of Light) where the pendrive couldn't keep with the transfer speed of a HDD and issues like laging music, stutter start to happen.

I think the reason it died was because it had a metallic enclosure and always was too hot.

USB PEN DRIVE
Positives:
  • Small and compact
  • Easier to move/attach to pc
Negatives
  • Gets hot in a compact case
  • Can be easily knocked/bent and break the usb port
  • Lifespan is greatly reduced in comparison to a hdd
  • Can only be overwritten a small amount of times before corruption becomes an issue
  • Branded clones are rife

EXTERNAL HDD
Positives:
  • More GB for your buck
  • Really robust in comparison
  • Less compacted with more space to breath producing less issues with temp in comparrison
  • Can be overwritten a massive amount of times without corruption issues
  • Long life span and will outlast a USB thumb drive ten fold.
  • Can be disconneted at the drive instead of the console so the usb port is at less of a risk
  • Rarely ever see a branded clone
Negatives:
  • Is audible in comparison to the silence of a Pen Drive
  • Bigger in comparison

I actually find the wd elements pretty, it looks robust, there is a feeling of quality in it.. It makes a little noise audible if you are an audiophile I only notice when I try to listen to it.. It's compact

There is a big problem in my opinion, has a very bright led that distracts and reflects on the wall, it even hurts my eye.. However I easily fixed this by putting a sticker above the led, I can see the light through the sticker but it doesn't flash my eyes anymore

This is why I velcro mine to the side of the console.

I wanted to say "you're a barbarian!" then I just remembered, I slapped a giant Hello Kitty sticker on me PS3 and 360.

Still, I'm no fan of external drives on consoles.

It's completely up to you. I've been using a spare 64GB PNY USB Thumbstick I had and it works beautifully. I've never had any crashes, power errors or long loading times.
