Nintendo 2DS sales rose over 500 percent compared to August 2015. Nintendo said this dramatic increase in part the result of the price cut that happened in may which made the 2DS $80

Nintendo 3DS hardware sales also improved, rising 83 percent compared to the same period last year. One thing to note is that this does not include sales of the Galaxy style N3DS XL which went on sale after the reporting period ended.

As for software sales, total 3DS first-party game sales jumped 57 percent, spanning both physical and digital sales

Well the reason software sales aren't higher than hardware is who has money to blow after spending $200+ on a system, charger, MicroSD and then games? It's not because of pirated software it's just the console themselves and peripherals adds up to more than most like to spend so they go slower on game purchases. Not to mention the hotter titles still have yet to come out so far.
