Piracy is on the rise, according to UK study

yaerr.png

More people continue to turn to piracy, a trend that has been growing since 2020, according to piracy tracker MUSO. With the advent of more streaming services than ever, online media consumers are pirating dramatically more, especially when it comes to film and publishing. Piracy is on the rise in all categories, which include TV, film, publishing, music, and software, with an increase of 20% over last year. Film piracy is up by a whopping 47%, with publishing-related piracy up by almost 40%, while TV and software both went up by about 10% each. Piracy of music saw the lowest growth, of less than 5%, but an increase nonetheless.

MUSO measured a variety of statistics, comparing illegal streaming sites versus illegal download sites. Overall, 54% of all piracy-related traffic goes toward streaming sites, while the rest is to torrent and download sites. A whopping 95.1% of pirated TV content is streamed, rather than downloaded, while the split is more even when it comes to film or music. According to the numbers, over 60% of traffic is direct, and only 28% comes from Google, or other search engine results. Most piracy occurs in the United States which has a moderate lead over the rest of the world, with Russia, India, and China following behind.

Prior to 2020, piracy traffic did not have such large growths, and in the 2010s, even saw a decline in most countries.

The report can claim all it wants. In reality the average person doesn't pirate and happy to pay. This is why big companies still make billions. Things like Kodi & downloading is too time consuming and difficult for the average joe. Piracy on this scale is almost to niche.
That's why Netflix's new ad-supported sub will still be profitable.

Fake economy, but people buy into it.

Are you using bluetooth to connect the controller? I know at least that the audio out works if you use the Xbox wireless adapter dongle instead.
Yes it was bluetoothed. No dongle. The audio would not work over Bluetooth. This is fine. Ive used wired controllers most of my life. Really don’t another adapter thingy. I also don’t need to worry about how much battery life my controller has. :)

Good. Piracy keeps robbing corporate entities in check.

No shit, everything is more expensive, job conditions worsen, salary is low, rent and electricity are more expensive than ever. No wonder people go back to piracy. Not a fan of piracy but I can understand people pirating since they cannot afford to pay for everything these days.

I need the qazwsxedc streaming services, and then the one show I want gets moved to the other service I don’t have a few months later. Streaming made piracy less appealing it was affordable and easy. Now it’s expensive and you need 10 services, making it complicated. I think companies mistook the easy factor as “oh my favorite show oMg!!!!” When it’s easier to torrent and stream to my tv than sign up for all the services, yea I’ll go the easiest route. I’ll pay for simplicity, but when shows move often to different platforms, that makes things just complicated enough.

I won't dispute the findings, but at the same time I'm not really worried.

* Russia is now second place when it comes to piracy. And comrade Putin made it legal to download western software.
* not sure how widespread it is, but whenever i visit one of the more... Fun sites of the internet, i go all GIMME EVERYTHING YOU GOT!! and store things offline to increase my backlog mountain size. I haven't consumed even a fraction of it (heck... I threw away around 80% during the pandemic because i won't live long enough to shift through outdated movies or games I've gotten legally in the meantime).
Streaming means most probably aren't doing that, but likewise i think many just stream things "because they can"
* what's with commercialization? I hardly ever watch tv, but now tv channels seem happy to advertise series and movies on channels that require a fee. It's like channels are saying the best stuff isn't on television

There's also something to be said about the study being in the uk. The porn illegalisation (gotta love them tories) means they're pushing their citizens toward illegal means of software distribution already. Couple that with their suicide government (how that tax cut for the rich going? :tpi:) and of course they're going to squeeze money.

Not sure what to gather from these numbers. Netflix lost some million subscribers earlier but they still have over 200 million and every other service keeps gaining subscribers. I guess those one million subscribers started pirating and boosted these figures but it seems likely something else is going on.

The thing that i hate most about streaming services is their DRM. I paid the yearly plan for Disney+ but i'm still pirating because i CAN'T watch their shows on my pc! Their windows store app has a limit of 720p and it's the same for watching through the browser. How is that even possible in 2022?! They put layer and layer of DRMs just for nothing, every new show is on torrents site from day one, who needs this?! The same thing happens on my phone, i unlocked the bootloader because i like to play with different custom roms, now netflix, disney+ etc. don't even start! I pay for services that i can't use! While pirates can download everything at maximum quality and they can play it everywhere without issues, that's ridiculous!

People: monopolies bad. Fuck Microsoft.

Also people: NOOOOO WHY ARE YOU MAKING YOUR OWN STREAMING PLATFORM RATHER THAN LETTING NETFLIX OWN EVERYTHING THIS IS SHIT >:’(

To all the dumb fucks complaining about multiple platforms, let me ask you this:

- a person watches, on average, 10 movies a month (it’s true, look it up)
- let’s assume that you need 3 platforms to watch those
- the average cost of renting a digital movie is $4
- your monthly expense for 3 streaming platforms is $35 per month

Would you look at that, the price is still lower than what you would pay if you rent, which is something that has been around since Blockbuster came. And that’s not counting all the other shit you can watch for those $35 too.

You can argue all you want that you’d rather pirate and keep the money to other useful stuff like Doritos and Mountain Dew, but let’s not pretend that a few more streaming services are going to bankrupt you because it’s just bullshit.
Monopolies are bad and exclusive content is bad. Both can be true at the same time. In fact, they often complement each other.

Not too surprising with the advent of streamed media and ebooks. It's a lot easier TO pirate them now. I imagine that was the only hold up.

Thats
Thats not piracy - if you cannot legally obtain them.
That's not how it works. Piracy is a term used to make the unauthorized use and reproduction of copyrighted goods sound scary. Using a commercial copyrighted software without a license is piracy regardless of whether or not the software is still sold new. Copyright doesn't expire because the material is no longer on the market (it'll be decades before copyright on recent things like video games expires). The only reason it's not enforced is it's a waste of resources to sue somebody for pirating an old game.

I do pirate tv shows and movies, but I no longer do so for games. I don't care if people pirate them as long as they can never sign in. there should be a caveat to pirating games at least.
