Yeah, it takes a lot longer than you might think the first time, especially if you're being very very very careful. Which you should be.

If you have EmuNAND with a huge SD card and a zillion games installed, the SD backing up and restoring part will also take a while.

1-2 hours

No way a first timer should be doing this in one hour. Maybe it took you an hour the second or third time, but one hour is careless.

Backup sysnand and emunand, backup formatted emunand, downgrade and flash it to sysnand, get otp and flash a backup
Not that hard, took an hour and 30 minutes or 2 hours

First time

4 hours is accurate, if you follow the steps carefully, as you should, there's a lot of backing up of NANDs, and transfers aren't fast, depending on your SD card. I guess it's not optimal when using the default SD cards. I have 5 3DSes, and so it was a 2 day period, on and off. Definitely worth it.

Well, again, that's for someone who is familiar with the process, and also that's if nothing strange happens.

A first timer really should be carefully reading and rereading the instructions.

If it's an O3DS, it might take around 2~3 hours. If it's an N3DS then it might take 3~4 hours (OTPHelper has to validate files and patch the NCSD header which takes longer). If time is a problem for you, try doing Step 4 in one day and Step 5 in another, although Step 5 is relatively fast if you wanna' do the backups at a later point.
