I recently bought a 2ds on craigslist for $10 with a cracked screen that I was just gonna replace and then flip the console. However, the video pinouts to the 3ds' motherboard are known correct? would it be possible to create 2 video outs? (one for top and one for bottom) I do not have a ton of experience hacking hardware myself but my older brother is an electrical engineer and absolute king with a soldering iron. I was also thinking I could remove the battery to help provide extra space since I'm going to have it plugged in all the time.

The video pinouts are straight LCD signals, you wouldn't really be able to put that into HDMI or any usable display port easily, unless you had a capture card board.

Ah I was getting the impression from reading smea's twitter from one time when he wanted to make his own that a simple video encoder would be possible to make a dvi out port

If I were able to do some more low level programming, would it be possible to get it working with some sort of microcontroller?

The battery can't be removed. It needs to be in the system for it to charge.

There are mods to allow it to work with a GameCube controller, and I think classic controller for Wii, so if you had the knowledge you could make some sort of controller.

Well if you (or your brother) were experienced enough with electrical engineering you could use a chip like the TFP410 which actually converts LCD signals to TMDS signals and then design a board which would use the 3DS LCD signals and the chip and push it to an HDMI port, but nobody has done something like that yet so the capture card manufacturers are still the only way to video capture at the moment.

my brother is, he's finishing up his master's right now - we'll see. I talked to him about it and he said he would maybe try to see what we could do over the summer. (He want to use it to try and teach me more low-level stuff) I'm alright with Java and C++ but I need a lot more work before I could pull anything like this off on my own.

If anything develops I'll update this thread

I think this would be pretty nice. I've thought of using one of my consoles for a TV output with controller support, probably either my 2DS or 3DSXL

He can easily remove the battery, take a USB cord, strip the wire and remove the white/green wire, and use the red/black as the positive/negative poles on the motherboard contacts, with the USB plugged into the wall.

This would be very inconvenient for touch screen functions :/

This would be more for games that don't use the touchscreen. I suppose if I wanted to do a lot of work I could study how the digitizer works and look into trying to emulate it with a touchpad or I could just replace the digitizer on the bottom screen. Part of this was not wanting to replace the screens and to instead do something cooler with it. again, probably won't touch this thread for a while if at all depending on what happens

You're kind of wrong about capture cards being the only way to capture 3DS video output. (this is for New-3DS only though, so for this guy it wouldn't work for his 2DS)

I own an n3ds, if what I had wanted to do was steam video that's what I would've done (I don't mean to put that harshly)

I happened upon a cheap 2ds and honestly what I most want to do is play my copy of mh4u on the big screen and the upcoming monster hunter generations as well

This looks like it could end badly if there's no surge protection on that outlet :/

By the way I think the battery has to be in there as there's no way to keep the real time clock linked to the charging port, it has to draw from the battery. And anything that isn't a battery doesn't sound like it will work.

True, and this is a weird method. But it works.
The battery is just a power source. It keeps time fine with this method; it's just that the 3DS will always be fully charged (according to itself's battery gauge) I had to use this method to charge my battery (then I experimented with no battery at all), just don't touch the bare wire with wet hands and you're usually okay.
