Pretty sure the 3ds runs many checks for validity and such to make sure the firmware is valid and above the current firmware. Also why would you need a higher firmware? The 3ds is just going to download that higher firmware instead, unless you somehow switch the files right after it checks, which doesnt sound very easy. Once the system bugs you to update, its probably already downloaded the update to the console, so at that point it wouldnt even care what files are on the server.

Eh. Last time I was notified of an update, I clicked it and it looked like it was downloading them. I could be wrong. See, why couldn't people have said stuff like this at the start of the post, instead of being farty...?

yeah, system updates just installs the firmware title by title, checking the current installed version as it goes, this can be pretty much proven as some people had "partially updated" consoles, so in these cases, the main parts of the system had been updated to 7.x+, but still displayed 4.x in the system firmware, for example 1 user had it displaying 4.2, but it had the miiverse icon on the homescreen that was added in 7.x, so they decided to "try" just running a on cart update to update to 4.5........basically it only updated system settings to display 4.5, but the core system still remained at 7.x

basically, you can spoof all you like, the system will still check the content it receives is not older than the current installed FW

Well, that's nice to know. Would've been great if people told me this at the start of the thread...

Personally though Im all for people suggesting things. Better suggest than be silent, even if your wrong. Someday someone will be right. Though you should ask about these things before opening up a kickstarter type thing.

any modification to the files will break the signature

Yeah... I know. Too bad :/

I know. I just got flooded with ideas when I found out I could download system titles and that updates were downloaded over HTTP. I'm stupid -_-

So 3 pages of just asking for a donation

No proof of concept

Giving no source of credibility on coding experience.

Ok here's the thing about the web. People who know how this works can only donate to something if they deem worthy. As you can see you started a kickstart program to help you, my question is where are those who were talking about a "bounty" a couple months back and to those who said they would pay Xyz to see it happen? Guess what you'll also see, FLAKERS.

Also you didn't explain what you were going to downgrade it to, as of this moment I'm not even sure how low you can downgrade it to but lowest firmware that I've seen on the n3ds is 8.1 and that probably won't help much anyway. The downgrade process can't be just ANY firmware. Pick one and go for it.

yeah that the only issue i had with the whole thing, its basically a "i dont know if this will work and i havent asked anyone, but hopefully people will still pay up"

if it would of been a "is this possible" thread, yeah im sure there would still be some sarky remarks, but not as many as if you ask for money to do something your not even sure you can do :D

By "higher firmware" - I meant that, you know how the NUS server categories titles by <TITLE ID>/<VERSION ID>? Well, I downloaded 9.2 and downloaded the titles that were updated in 9.5. After that, I renamed the 9.2 files to match the "<VERSION ID>" of the 9.5 ones. I was hoping that if Nintendo released a 9.6 update, I could just rename the 9.2 files to match the file names of 9.6's.

I didn't say I want to downgrade the n3ds, I just wanted one of those to move my stuff to. It doesn't matter now though - some people have explained to me why my concept wouldn't work even if I did redirect the downloads to older title versions.

I provided a proof of concept by explaining it in text.

I guess. Sorry... I don't always think things through. By the way - even if people did give me money and I found out it wouldn't work, I would've given it back to them through paypal anyway. I do have a concept of right and wrong.

ok now i wonder if it might be possible to use a similar method to just install specific titles by only making specific titles available and not the whole FW, so for example if someone was using a 8.1 JPN n3DS and doesn't have the web browser, i wonder if it would be possible to use something like this to basically block all parts of the update except the browser which would allow 8.1 users to install the browser, but not anything else.......i doubt it, but i suppose it stands more of a chance than downgrading

I was thinking if they could implement the old browser, like you said, from there possibilities could open up. If this were possible than people need to know that they can't update to the latest official firmware or else it will update the old browser. I guess this would be where emunand comes into play. But then again Nintendo can add to the firmware to check for certain versions every time we access eshop, friends list or play online.

This is a much better way to show PoC, something you need to do with this kind of scene.

well i dont think you could just install the spider browser as the new3ds is set up to only use skater i would imagine, but im just thinking there was some users on the old 3ds who didnt have the browser installed and so they had a choice, update to 9.5 to get browser, or have no browser and so no exploits......but as i said i doubt it would work out, the 3ds probably downloads all titles and verifies them before starting the update i would assume.....but idk, just a theory :P

Theories are always good, at least they can give "hope".

Also adding to the problem now, but if you want a thread closed, and it seems that almost everyone else agrees....you could pretty much lock it yourselves by not replying so it gets buried rather than pushed up the listings :P

Although it is funny sometimes to see it locked simply for the mods witty remarks
