Quick update:

I *think* I'm more or less done with the majority of the initial translation work on the game, main story-wise.

To give you a general idea: there are roughly 30-35 files that still have varying amounts of untouched, untranslated dialogue in them (I would assume most of it is NPC dialogue and other stuff), as opposed to the 130-140 that I've already translated or at least worked on. This is just a rough estimate but as you can see, most of the initial work is done on my end as far as the main story is concerned. All it really needs is some additional patchwork, editing, proofreading, and all that jazz.

In other words, you could *probably* play through the game with this amount of text translated. You might still come across Japanese stuff in-game that I potentially missed/failed to notice (especially in Fran's route, where I might've overlooked some minor dialogue differences), but I think you'd theoretically be able to enjoy most of the game.

Of course, this all means absolutely nothing without someone actually putting the text into the game. Since I saw no reply from any team members during the past 2 weeks, I went ahead and contacted the person I mentioned before, I'll be working together with him from now on, and he'll be using my translations.

Amazing! I love this game! Image Epoch in general is pretty amazing..people don't seem to like them for some reason though.

This is just to let you know that we're still alive and that progress has been made since last time. Translations can now be inserted into the game relatively easily. JamRules (with whom I've been working with since December) has done a fantastic job with the text inserter/file editor.

And also a couple of screenshots to give you a general feel of the English script I've been working on. (The lines may or may not change in the future) Yeah, the font looks all weird and a bit difficult to read, but that's what we have right now.

And here's a screenshot showing some of the problems that may arise, such as the last character of a line spilling outside the text box, in this case it's an exclamation mark at the end of her sentence:

It can be solved simply by making the text appear in two lines, though. I just messed up when inserting it.

It's nice to see the progress!
I wonder if the letter spacing won't be a problem, i mean you can fit 5-6 words per line in there, with a max of 3 lines per box.
What if the translation requires more than 15-18 English words?

The person who Gare is working with needs to add vwf to the game and use half width characters.
This is the font currently used in the game. And this is how it'll look with VFW and half width characters.

If I could, I would. I've extracted the font but it seems to be of a non standard .FNT type

Who's in charge of this project btw ? I'd like to know who is doing what.

Since the original translation team disappeared into thin air the only people working on this as far as i know are:
JamRules: Romhacking
GareJei: Translations

I'm sorry if i missed somebody else.

Yeah, that's pretty much accurate, there's only the two of us right now.

Sorry, forgot to reply to this. Yes, it is very much a problem. There are lines where my English translation is longer than what the space allows. Even for the the second picture, my original line was "All that awaits you is the sunless void of the nether world. A fitting end for ones such as yourselves." but obviously that had to be cut down. But there are other lines that are way longer.

So yeah, having the font fixed somehow would solve a lot of problems, haha.

I wouldn't mind the help, I'm guessing it's okay to upload files since there's the option so I've added the extracted .fnt for anyone interested.
You'll have to change the extension though.

Edit:
It seems that it might not be possible to change the text to half-width.
I figured out how the font works and while it can be changed it seems that chars will always be rendered at the same size

File is split up
+96 bytes - header
+256736 bytes - characters held in 15x15 grid, 113 bytes each,
pixels held as 1/2 byte making a 225 pixel image
+4544 bytes - 2272 Shift-JIS characters

The header

40EB0300 -> points to 03EB40 where a list of Shift-JIS characters starts
40000000
E0EA0300 -> E0x1 + EAx256 + 03x65536 = 256736 (size of file without header and Shift-JIS list)
C0110000 -> C0x1 + 11x256 -> 192 + 17x256 = 4544 (size of Shift-JIS list)
00000000
0300
0080
E008 -> 224x1 + 8x256 = 2272 (Number of Shift-JIS chars)
0F -> 15 grid width
0F -> 15 gridheight
04000000

No luck on the font so far.
I've been working on expanding the file editor so that it can edit none cutscenes (menus, names, etc), the logic is mainly done just have to sort out the editor UI. I also did some tests replacing the movie files so they can be subbed, I've got it to play a random video but it hangs afterwards maybe a problem with length.

Worrying about the font is pretty important! The font dictates how much text can go in a text box, among other things. If you nail down the font soon, you should only have to format the text in each text box once. If you sort out your font later, you might have to re-format the text in each text box, which is just making extra work for yourselves.

This, this and a million times this. Exactly.

So yeah, it's pretty important.
