it's only better for the consumer when the situation is such that intellectual property is protected, so that investments in research and development pay off for producers. this isn't the case here, that's the whole point. how dumb are you exactly?

Yes, protect the IP.

...just like everyone wants to protect the IP of the "backups" these cards are used to play.

Nice one, chief.

The fact of the matter is that these devices are created *almost* exclusively to allow people to steal intellectual property. I'm not sure why it's the case, then, that when the company that makes the soft/firm/hardware that allows its customers to steal IP has its IP stolen, everyone gets pissed.

It's like thieves stealing from thieves. Of course it is going to happen, its what these people do. There is also no protection from it as these companies are operating outside the bounds of the law (a lesson for you anarchists out there).

You all have the most extreme of double standards

I'm surprised GBATemp hasn't done a Front Page news story on Firmware copying by R4i/etc.
Seems like it would make a good article.

It's reasonable to expect a premium for being the first to market with a card, and Gateway's $90 initial price tag was that premium. It's now gone, and the price of their cards are starting to come down as a result. We've seen it countless times in the scene - first to market commands a premium, other people follow either through their own work or clong, and then prices come down.

I don't like what R4i did / is doing at all, but it would never have happened had they not sniffed out a huge amount of profit to be made. When Gateway was selling at $90 and likely earning margins of around $60 per card, they saw opportunity to fit in the middle and still make money. If Gateway's margins were only $10 per card, R4i wouldn't be anywhere near the space, GW would be selling twice the cards they are now, etc.

GW needs to fund development where R4i clearly doesn't, and there's some money there. How much is anyone's guess. I doubt they have a team of 10 programmers working on feature enhancements, but I don't think the couple they have are working for free, either.

There's a TON of money in this space for the quick-to-market teams. Anyone want to hazard a guess as to how many Gateways have been sold? 1000? Too low? Gateway's per-unit profit was (and, honestly, still is) pretty healthy, so multiply times that. Again, not saying "F them, they got theirs" - working in IT development myself, I'd never say that - but understand that the market changed from when they introduced. They were first out, took an option that saw very large per-unit profit, attracted low cost competition (and the parasitic tendencies) as a result, and are now moving into the second phase of the market, which is dealing with lower cost competition and positioning themelves as the premium offering. That has happened in every market since the beginning of time.

Remember this - you're buying these cards (Gateway, R4i, etc) for the functionality they have right at this moment. If you're buying based on "well, in 6 months it will support XYZ", you're smarter to choose the option that has a better chance of getting there. No guarantees either way, but I'd suspect that if Gateway didn't make the feature available, R4i/Orange/Link/etc sure aren't getting it.

Reminds me of uploaders getting bent out of shape because someone "stole" their links. How do you think the people who made the game you are pirating feel? If you're into piracy then fine, but at least quit it with the double standard that you get pissed when people steal the work of other pirates without giving credit.

Let me state this clearly for you guys.
For all i know everyone on gbatemp does piracy so quit the bullshit about boycotting piracy. There are two simple choices.
So either buy the product from a company that offer the piracy support or buy the product from a company that copy the product and release other company's software support as own.

The less money a company generate the bigger chance they will quit the support service and focusing on creating a new product that is harder to crack.
The gateway team will have to show better support because the high price ticket.
If the price become the same as the other card. They have nothing to lose by ceasing the support and copy paste like the other cloners. Which will not happen because the other team aren't doing a shit.
Once this happen the gateway team will definitely working on a card that is harder to crack with more features that is not available on the older card because the hardware limitation. So everyone need to buy a new card again. A happy end!

it has nothing to do with morality or double standard, this boycott is purely a practical measure to give us the best chance for good flashcard software.

get it through your thick skulls, already.

did you even read my post? I'm not making any ethical argument at all, just a practical one.

Gateway wont quit since theres money to be made, they will adjust their price over time, letting them have a monopoly in 3ds flashcarts is not going to help
Soon gateway will $150, since theres no competition from clones

They could just push out an anti clone update if they wanted too

Anyway get real tired of the constant immaturity on the scene, you are acting like spoiled brats
Every single thread about gateway or r4i I see "fanboy" in every other post
Grow up, and be happy that you even have anything
If somebody wants to pay half price and get the same thing as you payed double for, so what?
Let them, its not hurting you unless you are pissed off and trying to take it out on members
Just a few weeks ago you all had pitchforks and torches in hand ready to go after the gateway team for not putting any news updates out, prasing r4i, we see how quickly that changed
Just stop the petty bs ok?

OP
there ain't so many 4.5 units left in the world, so GW is probably not selling that many units anymore. and whats left is going to clones.. so yeah i predict GW will stop more updates and work solely on 7.x support because they will realize there is not much anymore to be gained with keeping support for 4.5.

if GW start thinking like the chinese, they got your money so they have no obligations to bring out more updates

AND TO EVERYONE DISCUSSING PIRACY IS BAD: GO AWAY AND TAKE OFF WITH YOUR HIGH HORSE

Cheap cloners will win the race in the less welfare countries. Mainly asia. No matter how good the gateway team is with their support. their sale in asia wont surpass the cheaper one. So it is matter of time that the price of gateway goes down and the pace of the support goes the same way.

I see the point there. Once all the 4.5 units are gone, another solution will either be found or GW will sink.

It will happen, though not as quickly as the general populous would prefer

maybe, maybe not. but Gbatemp isnt that stupid to start another flamewar...

getting mad is the first step of a defeat...

3 years and they can't make their own products ?

Hardly is that "knowing what they are doing".

haha good one this made my day...:rofl2:

may I remind you that r4i made several cards ,cheaper and expensive ones, and that their r4i gold 3ds (the black/bleu card not the starter) already runs on 7.0.0...

This. Bunch of pirates whining about their stuff getting stolen lol.

Fuck, go buy the game then to support the developers, or there wont be any game to play. Thats pretty practical tip I gave you but I dont see you do it. You see the irony and hypocrisy in your post?

I bet these 2 words do not exist in you skull.

R4i team behind Gold (and deluxe) has one of the best support in the last few years. They have proven their name with the Gold version. So I have more faith in R4i than GW.

Implying that being a (fairly) good DS flashcart developer automatically makes you a good 3DS flashcart developer. This is why we all are using our Supercard DSTHREE right now, eh?

Im not implying anything you said. It just give ME more faith when a company have proven to support heir product well. You dont have to agree with me.
That being said this doesnt guarantee a well supported 3DS card but so does GW. GW could stop supporting their card just like that tomorrow.

If 6 months later GW is still supporting their card then we can claim GW has long and quality support. Right now its too early to call.

Actually, I don't pirate games at all. I use my gateway to play backups of games I own, in conjunction with the Android sdcard app. (Until mutirom comes out, that is.)

Besides, none of what you said invalidates anything about my practical argument for boycotting clones.

Imagine there were no patent laws in real life. You think there would be any advanced medications for sale? Nope, no company would invest R & D money, when any old company would be able to steal their IP.

The fact that you can't disconnect the practical consequences of all this (in the context of flashcard clones) from the morality of piracy shows me you have a simple mind.

Very nice example that you mentioned here - the patent law has greatly hindered pharmaceutical progress in the past and is partly responsible for millions of people dying in third world countries.

  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
