I know that my 3DS will automatically download firmware updates if left connected to the Internet while in sleep mode. What I don't know is if it will still download those updates while playing a legit Mario Kart 7 game online. I'm hoping it doesn't - then I could just leave the WiFi switch off, except when playing online.

I've getting a Gateway, but I dunno if the exploit it uses stops auto FW updates or not. I think I read somewhere it does? Is is still safe to play legit 3DS games online after the exploit has been installed, or from emuNAND?

It would be nice to leave the WiFi on again, to play ≤4.5 FW games online and get StreetPasses, without having to worry about getting that annoying update prompt every time I power the 3DS on. I don't have that pompt now, but if I did, would the Gateway exploit get rid of it? Would passing one of those Nintendo Zone spots like they have in most McDonald's automatically download a FW update, even if it wasn't registered in Network settings?

Thanks for any advice.

i dont think gateway works online yet. mk7 requires a patch to play online anyways so you would need the latest firmware to download it from e-shop thus blocking gateway. this means original karts only for online, you can still play single player.

He's not talking about playing the gateway version. In response to OP's question I'm not sure but it seems likely that it will download the update while playing.

It will probably download the update anytime it's connected to the internet and in 3DS mode. However, I do not know for sure.

The Gateway installer doesn't stop downloading updates, only stops nagging you to install them. It would be the same thing, but the files do download onto the SD Card.

Updates only download if you sit around on the home screen/leave it sleeping & even then, I think you need spotpass on (not sure).

It won't download firmware updates if you just switch wifi on once you are in game. I played Mario Kart online for a long time on 4.5 (already had the update from eshop) and Luigis mansion and it never downloaded a firmware update.

It doesn't auto update anyway, so unless you have a habit of accidental accepting the prompt twice, then it wouldn't install anyway, even if it did download one.

If the update is needed to go online, it won’t work on 4.5, since you’re not able to use eShop. AFAIK the update corrected some shortcuts to avoid cheating so I assume you must install it before you play. If it’s not forced to you you’ll be able to play online just like with ACNL where is an update available but the game goes online just fine without it.
If you’re able to play the game online—you’re fine. Just press B every time it prompts to update. Be careful and keep it in mind. Your console won’t be updated without you knowing it. Just read all the pop-ups. I heard people updating when trying download play and things. So, just be careful.

To play MK7 online one needs to download a patch that fixed various shortcuts to get ahead in the race. In order to download this patch you need to enter the eshop and download it. If you already have this patch downloaded then yes going online with an official game should not be a problem. My primary 3DS has the latest firmware updates but if I consider getting a secondary 3DS along with the Gateway then I will be unable to download the online update from the eShop.

the MK7 patch came out before 5.x firmware did (the patch came out ~may 15th, 2012, firmware 5.x was not introduced until ~March 25th, 2013) .

the legit cart with the update cannot auto update the system firmware as far as I know. wasn't the firmware auto download and apply in sleep feature introduced the 5.x firmware?

I actually had it downloaded before I even purchased MK7. I do not have a Gateway3DS as i am on firmware 6.x, but what I want to know is if online works if you already had the MK7 patch downloaded before or while on 4.5, then run the game via Gateway.
is there really nobody with a Gateway who is 4.5 or lower and has the MK7 patch to see if online works then?

I am considering getting a 4.5 or lower 3DS and Gateway sometime soon so thats why i am asking.

Of course it works, but I'm not understanding what you are asking exactly so I'll give you 3 answers:

1. Mario Kart works perfectly fine on 4.5 if you have the 1.1 patch outside GW mode.
2. A retail cartridge can't be read on GW mode, so it simply won't work with GW 1.2
3. I downloaded the Taiwanese version of Mario Kart and it loaded the 1.1 icon perfectly fine, of course you can't play for the sole reason GW has no online support yet.

thanks for the reply.
I was asking both #1 and #3. I already know about retail carts not working in GW 1.2.
next time I ask something, I will clarify what exactly I am asking to avoid needing to guess what the questions are.

I'm pretty sure that, yes, it will download the update, or at least set the flag on the 3DS so that it will nag you each time you turn it on. So unfortunately it is not safe to walk around just trying to get Streetpasses, unless you're very sure you're not near a Nintendo Zone.

I believe this is what the point of the Gateway's emulated NAND is.
The 3ds boots 4.5.x from its genuine NAND, and from there you use the Gateway exploit to load up an emulated NAND from the SD card.
In emulated NAND mode you can freely update the firmware on emu-NAND, without updating the firmware on the genuine NAND.
With current firmware on emu-NAND you can freely access the eShop to download the MK7 patch, and play your copy online without being prompted to update your firmware, and continue to use the Gateway as you please.
