I'm worried that even if I stay on a low firmware I might not be able to play future releases on it (if they require something in the updated firmware and the team doesn't workaround well).
Gateway said:
All games released after March 2013 will force an update to 4.5 (even backup roms).

Nope, not even close of thinking of getting one since all it allows is piracy and does nothing about region lock or homebrew, while I don't care that much about homebrew, I do like emulators and it would be nice to see what sort of emulation the 3DS could pull off.

4.5 isn't problematic. It's future games like everything pokemon and on forcing some 6.1+ or 7.0 or something and the team never getting around it. That's what worries me.

If they can't figure out how to run games on 4.5ofw that are released with/depend on/bundle with higher updates it could spell trouble. Either they need to keep breaking new firmware or they need to strip and develop a bridge for the firmware utility gaps. Worried.

Yeah, I was showing they don't seem to have a way to stop updates on newer games from happening.

Perhaps it won't take them long to figure it out, though. If they have full kernel access, then it should be technically possible, as well as the other "features" they said they'd look into, like launching games from other regions.

I bought a 3ds for its awesome games, and I don't feel like pirating current handheld games anymore. For homebrew, I already have a powerful tablet hooked up with a PS3 controller that can do more than what a 3ds does, and without a need of an expensive flashcart. I can even play full speed emulators.

It depends wether Gateway keeps updating and becomes 6.x compatible or not.
I don't want a card that will last me forever, but that is at least able to play this year's upcoming roms...
I think we should ask the same question after a solid review.

I'm in wait-and-see mode. Had a 3DS since launch, and it's my most played gaming system currently. But I wanna see how the homebrew thing plays out a bit before diving in on this system.

And this poll proves that gateway will fail if they can't get it to work on 5.x+. I bought one and voted yes as complaining about swapping sd cards is irrevelant with the new save feature. you can only play one game at a time so there is no need to have multiple roms on one card. if you wanna play a different game just pull the sd out and put a different game on it. your save is put on the ds's sd card. It's just super handy to have multiple roms on one sd card which will come later when supercard rules this with a new card lol :yaysp:

first gen cards always suck and have super limitations......

It's true, the save thing was a big break. If they can get the newest firmware running they win in my book and I'll get one. It'll prove that they have some staying power.

This waiting is killing me. I've been pretty patient but now that SMT4 is out I either want to get the game legit and hope it doesn't demand an update beyond 4.5 to play or else I want to get the gateway and hope it can strip out the updates and still run things. Either way, as it stands, I have to wait longer.

I'm going to wait until a different team has reverse-engineered it and begun mass production.

If other teams manage to reverse engineer it, what makes you think they can improve it? Gateway has shown they have the experience and know-how, while other teams have shown nothing at all.

If Gateway plays their cards right, I see features like region-free, 3dsware roms, cheats, etc etc

EDIT: HELL YISSS I'LL BUY ONE!!! FUCK YEAH

Gonna wait for something that actually plays homebrew. If I have to swap sd card for each game, I'd stick to retail games. Seems like it's created for piracy.
