Good point Maxternal about Nintendo eventually taking Wii out of WiiU ... it seems inevitable :(
Would be hard since they build wiiu at the base of the wii (though could be wrong).
If I'm wrong than they might save some money at the cost of making the wiiu and then may drop the selling price (or keep the price and get profit on selling just wiiu's, right?).

I want to say the special Wii parts were built into the Wii U, like the GPU. Not 100% sure. POINT is, if Nintendo updates, they can take out the Wii mode. HOWEVER, I don't see it happening. I have not looked at Wii Mini other than to see it removed SD card slot.

Never say never but I don't see it happening. More likely they finally patch what people are still using. It seems there are no significant changes to the vWii with the most recent updates. This is why I think it is IMPERATIVE, PARAMOUNT that something get ONTO the Wii U from what Marcan put out that can PREVENT ALL UPDATES. My brain was picturing something like the "Update scraper" Marcan mentioned if it could pull updates. THEN those with a hacked Wii U could mod the updates before applying them. LOTS of steps but as a "General overview" here. THE pattern seems to be "Take, HOLD, fortify, apply as needed." Wii had ways to stop updates and the 360 DEFINITELY did.

Regardless of what happens, THIS idea must occur to ensure the hacked systems remain hacked.

EDIT: Marcan likely has the LOWEST levels unlocked. If Nintendo did do something like this, I bet he could open it back up. He gave a hole, NOT all the keys;-)

It would be legally moronic for Ninty to "pull" Wii mode out of the U. I purchased a console with the understanding that it had backward compat. Take that away from me and I'm suing! :)

NIntendo won't go that far. Updates, expect updates if necessary. Also, lets not go into "Nintendo...will file lawsuit." None of what we discuss is licensed by, nor it is intended to be used on the Wii U. If you are not modding the vWii, not looking to mod the Wii U, hey, guess you could have a gripe if it is explicitly promised/sold to have Wii backwards compatibility. Expectation does not = law though.

No they won't do it any time soon but they might after some years (7??) like the wii mini came eventually.
Though if they REALLY plan to put out the wii backwards compability, then they should rename it :P (won't happen though).

I was just talking about what they did with the Wii. The Wii was originally advertised as GC compatible. Later they stopped producing NEW Wiis with that feature. They didn't take that feature OUT of the older Wiis that already had it. I was just talking about if some day they decide to make a new model Wii U that didn't have Wii compatibility mode anymore. The NEW Wii U's wouldn't have that feature because it was just never built into them. The old ones still would.

Nintendo would never do that, simply because there is no reason to and it is a poor business move, but how the hell can you possibly be that naive?

Maybe someone can help me understand why the WII U hardware is so uninteresting and nothing special. The Wii was an upgraded Gamecube with a different style of controller
(obviously I'm generalizing). The Wii U is pretty much the modern day equivalent (an upgraded wii with a diff style of controller)..

Well, for the heck of it I went through the pseudo-C that he had there for the core initialization and converted most of what I think needed to be converted to assembly (and then realized I had put all the arguments for the assembly commands backwards ... but oh well) just to realize there's two things I don't know what to do with. The first one I probably should know but it's the MSR (register?) that he uses to enable floating point and the other is the "new_l2cr" that I don't know what he's referring to, whether it's a register(that he doesn't give the number for) or just a pseudo variable, but overall it seems like something that if someone knew what they were doing, actually HAD a Wii U and a little more than me (I'm at work right now and need to stop messing with code before I get caught and fired.) It should be pretty straightforward to do.

All the places where he put in there "insert standard/boring blah, blah here." I didn't know what the standard thing to do there was and the first part of just getting into semi-Wii U mode in the first place, I know I've seen the commands he's referring to but I just don't remember what they are. Basically, it sounds doable but maybe just not by me without a little research. It should be simple enough, though, for someone to put it all together and just make it into a simple "library" of sorts that any homebrewer could just link into his code.

EDIT : well, figured the MSR one out at least.

They have no more interest in doing it themselves because they think that no one else has any interest.
This is just a bit of bait to see if anyone bites. If they feel a good yank on their fishing pole they might get excited.

Agreed. They say as much in their post:

"Getting multicore support into some kind of homebrew platform is one of the many steps required to get to a Wii U homebrew ecosystem, so consider this a test to gauge the interest of the homebrew community. If there ends up being significant interest and progress is made, we will reconsider working towards a Wii U-mode homebrew ecosystem (or perhaps just pass on what we have to those who are more motivated than we are)."

I'm just grateful they're giving us a chance

Yeah it does. If the system was sold with certain features that are later removed, that's grounds for a lawsuit (or at least a partial refunds) depending on your area. After all, they took away from a product that you already bought.

The thing is on a PS3 they took that away with a firmware update. People bought it WITH that feature and it was then removed from the consoles they had already purchased.
Lol, weak on PS3 history. I can see that, if feature was explicitly promised/advertised. If company revises and it is not under those conditions, I don't think a judge could find against company. Need to check court cases but "At first glance"...lol.

Anyone heard about work taken up by anyone? A guy said he was toying with code but that is all I've heard. I avoid Irc, so thought asking here was good idea.

I might be the one who was "toying with the code" but I don't even have a console to run it on. I think those who really are going at this are too busy to show up and report in. I'm hoping to just see a thread pop up "vWii tri-core proof of concept" or something like that and then looking at the OP and think, "hey, I was wondering where [insert dev name here] had been all this time."

That's not taking away from a product you already bought. The Wii Mini coming into existence does nothing to the original Wii model people have in their homes.
Yeah, that is what maxternal said and I acknowledged and agreed.

Edit: anyone else think Wii mini is stupid idea and waste of development?

Rydian , what knows you about anyone working on exploit? Ever heard about eMMC reading;-)?
