3DS games: is it safe to assume there are no fake cartridges out there (bootleg games)? Supposedly 3ds roms have been dumped, what's stopping someone from loading them onto a cartridge?

I think they're currently in the making. Not sure if they are on the market yet, but they certainly are in the works.

Wait, what would this accomplish for us?
Nothing, just the risk of getting a 1:1 fake copy when you buy 3DS games off ebay. The region locking is software based so this is strictly for piracy, you can't even load different games on the same cart or anything and obviously no homebrew either.

well, in the past, bootlegs have had a tendency to break easily. saving would also not work most of the time.

my stepfather got my stepbrother a bootleg of yoshis gravitation. it didnt have the tiltsensor, so it was unplayable. damn retard bought him several more bootlegs every year for his birthday. just wouldnt give a shit.

anyway, one should never opt for a bootleg.

also, werent there rumors that 3ds was set to brick if you insert bootleg ds games?

If it works then I dont care.
Yeah, see, the problem occurs when they don't work, or fail early, or lack features, etc.

wait, i thought that we need to hack the 3DS first before we can make a bootleg??
now this is confusing O.O
No. It needs to be hacked to load ROMs (as in, more than one and not from a game cart) and run homebrew.

A bootleg is just a copy of a game cart. Bootlegs only hold one game (period in this case, it's not reflashable), so it's not something most people care about.

No, there's nothing technically standing in the way of creating a 1:1 copy of a CTR-005 (3DS game card) as long as you match the components. If the communication between the 3DS and the game card is exactly the same, then no hack is needed.

I once bought Lunar for the GBA on eBay (no box/instructions). I could tell right away that it was a bootleg because the label looked poor quality and game saves only worked for about a week after I bought it. Best thing to do is stick to boxed pre-owned or new because it will be easier to spot a fake.

I haven't seen any. I wouldn't mind buying them if they existed, were a fraction of the price of retail games and worked properly. My previous experience with bootleg games have been hit and miss. Zelda DX for GBC stopped saving after a while (replacing the battery didn't help), but the Pokemon Silver bootleg copy was still going strong the last time I played it. Which granted, was a few years ago, but if anything I would just have to replace the battery and it would save fine again.

IMO the worst thing about bootlegs is how they flood the secondary market on places like ebay. At one point it was near impossible to find certain real GBA games on there, they were all bootlegs.
