Gabe and the rest of Valve are nortoriously tight lipped teases when it comes to their games. Vagueness and misdirection are practically the guiding principles to Valve's PR.

So imagine the shock when Gabe Newell opened up to fans who gathered at Valve HQ to celebrate his birthday, freely admitting that the company has a next gen engine in the pipeline.
[From this video...]

Fan: Is Valve potentially already working on a new engine?
Fan: Source 2? Could or… could not be?
Gabe Newell: We’ve been working on Valve’s new engine stuff for a while, we’re probably just [incomprehensible, subtitled as: "waiting for a game to roll it out with"]
Fan: Is it going to be more than just an extension to Source? Is it an entirely new engine?
Gabe Newell: Yeah!

Considering that files in Source Film Maker alluded to "Source 2", it all adds up. There's Valve Time to consider, sure, but we may very well get an official glimpse at the new engine soon enough. And hey, with a brand new engine, maybe we'll get some hints about "Ricochet 2" as well.

You know, you gotta love Gabe. Sure, he may have pushed hats on an unsuspecting public, and he may play our heartstrings like a fiddle, but this was an awfully nice gift to give on his birthday. You see, he really does care!

Or not. This is Valve we're talking about, after all; you know the drill.

I can't wait to get my hands on this in 2018, Maybe half life 3 will be its debut game.
(This actually does bode well for Half Life though)

I wonder how nice this so called source2 is, there is a lot more competition in the game industry these days (Unreal is probably the biggest one right now)

Do you think we'll get a gmod type game for it? Gmod is the shit.

They say completely new engine, but at the same time I find it rather likely to be a major revision of the engine rather than a completely new one. Kind of like when they went from GoldSRC to Source Engine back in the day.

I imagine they've rewritten everything they considered in need of being replaced, but also keeping old and stable code that wasn't in need of updating. Rewriting everything just for the sake of it doesn't make any sense after all.

I wonder how many bits of Quake are left in this "Source 2"... I mean, damn, ID - your stuff from ages back is still being used to this day... :P

No point in replacing decent code is there? :P
Pretty much, yeah.

I remember reading an article with the exact date when "supposedly" the last line derrived from the original Quake was removed from the Source engine, but I cannot find it now, so perhaps it was false - all the resources I have state that as of 2004 (in Half-Life 2), there were still lines of code in it that were from good 'ol Quake, however given the nature of the Source engine and its updates, this may not be the case anymore... so I'm curious. :P

The Source engine scored full points for wow factor when Half Life 2 was released. It tingles me with excitement to see how games on this new engine would look
