I bought a new hdd (seagate expension 2TB) today to try out wiiflow but can't seem to get it to work. Currently, starting any game through wiiflow will result in a black screen followed with a restart back to the wii menu.

The version i'm using is wiiflow 4.2.1

I did a syscheck and as far as i can see everything looks okay but i hope that one of you guys can see a problem here.

Is your hard disk formatted with a single FAT32 partition (no hidden or NTFS partitions?)

Do you have WiiFlow loaded on the hard disk or an SD card?

The hdd consists of a single FAT32 partition and WiiFlow is loaded on the sd card. Also, i noticed that the homebrew channel crashes if i choose hdd 1 as source.

I am not sure but I think I have seen something bout how to change the Boot Up animation of WiiFlow?

THX fellas again for all the help :yaywii:

Abz's guide is in his sig, maybe you saw it there?
http://gbatemp.net/topic/330880-changing-wiiflow-boot-animation/

The guide looks complicated, well I was intimidated by it, but it's just installing a few bits, finding tortoise svn's right click menu, and maybe a bit of copying and pasting.

Just a couple of updates - note the collective size of all the images can't add up to over 18.5kb*, and the dimensions (in pixels) must be a multiple of 8 - eg 100x200 is not ok, because 100 isn't divisible by 8 - 96x200, 80x200, (64x64, 128x128?) are all cool.

Once you can compile wiiflow - and it is doable - all you need to do, really, is replace the wait jpgs with your own.

if you want it to repeat one way instead of back and forth, you just copy and paste 2 lines.

clean, make, done :)

if you get more adventurous, you can use any number of frames (keeping under 18.5kb!), and some things work better with png compression - the guide's there for the more complicated stuff - scroll further down Abz's thread for updates on using .pngs!

*Although, feel free to experiment! There's been a lot of mem2 freed up apparently - I don't know the significance of this for boot animations, so don't expect it to work :)
Keeping things under 18.5kb makes it an interesting challenge. For me, anyway!

Just tried using the emunand included in abz wiiflow masterpack and got some mixed results.

For some reason the wii will still bring me back to the wii menu but some games will be loaded in the disc channel and are actually playable through the disc channel, and other games show other behaviour.

Red Steel 2 shows up in disc channel
Xenoblade shows up in disc channel
Mario galaxy 2 will result in Red Steel 2 showing up in disc channel
Dead space will result in Red Steel 2 showing up in disc channel

So i figured i wanted to see what happenes if i delete Red Steel 2 and load one of these games, and it resulted in the message: "This is not a Wii or GC disc". (Except for Xenoblade. This one still shows up in the disc channel)

What is going on here?

that is REALLY bad, the homebrew channel is extremly stable and should be pretty much crashproof, a crash basically means something with the hdd must be seriously wrong. I would suggest backing up your data, then doing a low level hdd format, then reformatting to fat32 using easeus.

There may be something wrong with the hdd indeed. I did check for bad sectors when i got it out of the plastic yesterday but nothing came up.
Just tried with an old 1T ntfs and a 2GB Flash drive and both of them seem to work just fine in the homebrew channel. Going to try out a low level hdd format now.

update: Haha, the format takes 18 hours at 30MB/s

update 2: In the meantime, i remodded with ModWii and tried to get it working with the ntfs hdd and it gave me the same result. Switched usb port again and it worked perfectly. I guess the remodding fixed it for me. Gonna try with my new hdd again next monday. Thanks for the help guys.

Since we are talking about odd problems here's one that I've been having lately.

I am using r1059 on a 2TB single FAT32 partition Seagate drive. I'm using 10.1 (alt) in USB port 0 but I've also confirmed this happens with v10 and all the way back to v8 final.

If I wipe the wiiflow.ini and settings/gameconfig files - essentially a clean new setup I can play a few games and it will return to the WiiFlow screen but after running a few games I get a screen dump. Below is my debug output. This appears to happen on anything post r1054. If I go back to r1054 I can play games w/o screen dumps.

Is anyone else running a rev later than 1054? If so please try running a few games one after another without exiting WiiFlow and see if it crashes. TIA.

what is a ssd drive?? if you mean a hhd drive check out western digital. i havnt had any issue's ever

SSD stands for solid state drive... no moving parts, much faster than a regular hard disk. I've used a couple on the Wii and they worked but the speed wasn't much faster than a regular hard disk since the limiting factor is the USB 2.0 interface.

Has anyone tested r1055 or later? I think there is a problem with the new memory manager or something else where if you run a few games it code dumps. Can someone else check on their system? TIA.

I'll check today, I have a 2TB HDD (512kb low level sectors), just run a game exit to wiiflow, rinse and repeat?

Yes, I do it a few times with post r1054 and it code dumps. Be sure that you have it set to return to WiiFlow as if you run it once and exit back to the main channel menu and re-run WiiFlow and then a game it works fine. Seems like several times and then it code dumps.

Thanks!

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
