So I'm not near my Wii U to check it at the moment, but if I don't have the internet browser on my Wii U, how can I get it on there without going online? Since.. going online will get my Wii U updated to a bad version for the exploits?

Q: If I want to block Nintendo's updates, what should I block?
A:

  • nus.c.shop.nintendowifi.net
  • nus.cdn.c.shop.nintendowifi.net
  • nus.cdn.shop.wii.com
  • nus.cdn.wup.shop.nintendo.net
  • nus.wup.shop.nintendo.net
Forgive me for being an idiot but how EXACTLY do I block these updates? These directions are not specific enough.

As I've said before elsewhere on these forums, I highly recommend setting up a block on your router, too, if possible. It adds a second layer of security on top of OpenDNS. That way, if your IP address is dynamic, and for some reason your OpenDNS info isn't updated, then the router blocks the updates as a failsafe. If you have other devices in the house that need access to system updates and eShop, many routers will let you set 1 or more IP addresses on the LAN that are exempt from the filter. Set up your 3DS or other Nintendo console to always use that excluded IP address, and then set up your router to always reserve a filtered address for your Wii U, so that it won't get assigned the unfiltered address by random chance.

Example:
Unfiltered address (updates and eShop not blocked by router)
10.0.0.254

Filtered addresses (updates and eShop blocked by router): 10.0.0.2 - 10.0.0.253

Address reserved for Wii U by router:
Any address in that filtered range above (10.0.0.2 - 10.0.0.253)

To reserve the address of your Wii U on your router, you'll need its MAC address from System Settings.

Other than that, just follow the OpenDNS guide linked above.

I also recommend blocking at least one website address that no one else in your household uses via OpenDNS, just to confirm it's working. Say, for example, a porn site or some obscure site no one in your house would think to visit. Then, when you have your setup active, try to navigate to that site from your Wii U, and if you get the OpenDNS block message, you know it's working on the Nintendo CDN servers.

Also, quick note:
I can confirm that if your Wii U does download the update while you're playing one day, DON'T PANIC. Wait until it gives you an on-screen menu with only one option (OK) that asks you to install the update. Once you have that on the screen (NOT BEFORE, and definitely NOT AFTER hitting OK), unplug the Wii U. I did exactly that, and when I restarted the system, the downloaded update was gone and I was still on 5.3.2 U.

Well then what version should I look for since I might be able to find it off of amazon.com site and I know it may or may or may not work, but better then blindly picking a Wii U. Or a release date I should look for. Thanks

Anything that may be slightly out of date, I wouldn't go refurbished, and I doubt most bundles will be on 5.4.0 yet

It appears OpenDNS blocking isn't working at all anymore. Turned on my console today, and checked the download manager out of habit, and saw the update was almost finished.
Managed to quickly run the update remover homebrew and all was well again. I've got both OpenDNS set up, and the URLs blocked on my router, yet the update came through.

@wj44:

It worked!
I finally was able to load Pong in my 5.3.2U Wii U, and twice in a row. :D
One with your website and the other with FIX94's site!

Here's what I did if anyone is having issues like I did:

  1. Close all current tabs from your Wii U's Internet Browser.
  2. You will be left with the most visited pages, and at the top right you'll see the settings icon, press it to enter settings.
  3. Press the "Delete Cookies" button from the Settings, then back to the previous screen after doing so.
  4. Now enter one of the following addresses into the Address Bar (Remember that you should have NO other tabs opened and must have cleared the browser's cookies previous to this!):
5. From any of those three, select your desired homebrew.
It might look like it freezes for a bit but after 5 or so seconds the homebrew will load.
6. ENJOY! :D

PS: To any mod/admin (@Cyan hopefully) or the OP himself, could you put those three links in the Opening Post so that they are easy to acccess?
I struggled to find them since they are scattered through the forum, that way we all have an easy way to see them quickly.
