No, I did not delete the chat or safety apps (or any NAND apps actually), frankly I'm shocked you did and that everything works as well as it does. I would have been scared that deleting such NAND apps could brick my Wii U. The only NAND change I have is my custom wara wara plaza, which was no issue for the update and stayed as the custom one i installed.

Anyway, this sounds like your issue in updating to the new firmware. You really don't need it though, it adds nothing (at this time anyway, I see that is theorized this update will maintain Wii U online experiences after Nintendo changes their servers). But maybe if you could get those apps back on your nand via ftpiiu you could then update? But I'd be wary of that potentially bricking too. Probably best to just follow the tutorial to remove the update notification if you haven't already.
I have deleted the apps in the hope of getting more space, plus I wanted to get rid of the useless icons (it did work for Wii U Chat for example, but it did not for Miiverse).

Also, my Wii U has been a bit unstable even without touching the NAND, I was happy when they annonced the 5.5.5 one since it would help with stability and potentially fix my problems, but bam, the console refuses to update :/

And I can't play online if I don't update (although I can use NNU-Patcher, but it's annoying having to set it up everytime I need to go online)

I will probably set up RedNAND and start tinkering there in order to "debug" the problem via trial and error, that's what I did for the system apps in order to be sure that they are safe to delete, I have multiple NAND backups before I started touching my Wii U anyway, so I will be able to see what I modified.
Still annoying that nobody bothered in developing something like a boot2 solution to restore the NAND backup without the need to solder... Yet we are getting useless ports of games like Mario 64 (C'mon, that one is even on the VC) and GTA 3 (that any potato PC can run...) Oh well...

Hey now, at least the Mario 64 port enables native widescreen, gives you full camera control with the right stick, as well as the cheat menu, and if you don't want those extra features you don't' need to build it with them. And yeah, GTA 3 runs on everything, but its still pretty cool to see it on a Nintendo system after all this time when the only GTA games Nintendo has ever seen are old top down handheld versions. I certainly welcome more classic decompilations to the Wii U, especially for games that never graced a Nintendo system to begin with.

Don't get me wrong, it's nice to see Wii U development, but to be honest I would rather prefer people that is still developing for the Wii U to focus on making more essential stuff for the machine rather that developing games that you can play elsewhere and better than the Wii U (you said about GTA on Nintendo platforms, ignoring China Towns, Advance etc you can play GTA 3 on the Switch, since that port has been done there as well... plus it's portable, there you have GTA in a Nintendo platform, and if more Source Code is available for other games you will end see them for Switch as well).
Stuff like restoring the NAND from an early stage at boot in the system would be amazing, would save a lot of dead Wii Us, I believe people should focus on that stuff... not on ports of 20+ years old games y'know? At least add exclusive stuff to the Wii U if you are going to do it, things that make the version worth it, like using the GamePad in new ways, since you have the source code available, you can do that.

Other thing would be having proper backups of Wii U HDDs, DumpsterU is the closest to it, but you still need to repack everything since it's decrypted :/ (but as long I can reinstall my games and saves, etc later on it's good enough).

Thank everybody for sharing your experiences with this version. On my 5.5.3J console it gave a few issues but I had messed with region and wii sandbox environment forwarder. I saw the differences were so little that I decided to not update in the end but I seems to be safe to update with CBHC also on Japanese systems.

Anyone able to tell me what files or folders are modified when updating the firmware from 5.3 to 5.5?

I like keeping my cemu and Wii U 1:1 so I want to update anything needed on cemu after i update this pesky firmware.

Thanks for the video, good to know it is safe to update!

Still a question though, my WiiU also has CHBC and it shows version 99.99.99E It is possible that one of the kids did the update by accident but how can I tell if it has updated correctly to 5.5.5 ?

they need to have a strong line up on the launch titles too. I think they should move metroid prime 4 to the next console because by now it has been quite a while and there's no release date scheduled yet
  • realtimesave @ realtimesave:
lol there's a guy selling mig switch in usa on ebay for $200/ea he's definitely going to get nailed with dmca by tomorrow
  • ZeroT21 @ ZeroT21:
Wasn't Metroid Prime 4 teased all the way back in 2017? For the switch no less?

Pretty sure anyone buying the switch just for that got duped

    for $200? rofl.
  • realtimesave @ realtimesave:
well as far as metroid prime 4 is concerned, the next system probably is similar enough to the current gen they can probably easily just slap it onto a next gen cart and call it good :P
